Empire! Empire! (I Was a Lonely Estate) + Rika - 2012 split 7"

Genre : Indie | Emo

Empire! Empire! embarked on their first European tour back in ought '10 when they met and played a few shows with an amazing band from Austria called Rika. They became fast friends and pledged to do a split 7" soon after. The soon after only took 2 years!
The result may have taken 2 years, but we totally feel it was worth the wait. Empire! Empire! lay down 2 emotionally charged tracks on Side A, while Rika uses literally all the space they can to craft a beautiful track (with a splash of Flugelhorn!) on Side B.

Empire! Empire! (I Was a Lonely Estate) - 2011 Home After Three Months Away

Band : Empire! Empire! (I Was a Lonely Estate)
Album : Home After Three Months Away
Release Year : 2011
Genre : Emo | Indie

Tracklist :
 01. The Loneliness Inside Me Is a Place
02. Water
03. Everything Rests on Your Small Shoulders
04. I Swim Like a Minnow

Empire! Empire! (I was a lonely estate) is an American emo band from Michigan. It was formed in 2006 originally as a solo project of band member Keith Latinen. The band's music is most often described as emotional indie rock reminiscent of 90's emo bands such as Mineral and American Football. The band's first release was in 2007 with a EP titled "When The Sea Became A Giant". The band released a full-length album, "What It Takes To Move Forward", in 2009. The band is currently signed to Count Your Lucky Stars Records.

Latinen originally thought of the band's long name when it was still his solo project. He wanted a name that sounded "elaborate and artistic" but admits that if he would have known that the project would form into a full band he would have chosen something easier to remember. As for the meaning behind the name, Keith had a lifetime of bands not working out, and so he chose a name to reflect my frustration. He tend to hides lyrics and names behind a lot of dense symbolism, so here’s the general break-down of the name. “Empire! Empire!” is that one evasive dream that you want so badly, and you will always chase it, but it never seems quite in reach. The “(I Was a Lonely Estate)” portion was where he felt he was incomplete and insignificant. It’s hard to get off the ground if you can’t find reliable people to share your dream. The exclamation points mark how important the dream is, and the parenthesis signify that he feels like he is unimportant and unnoticed.

It's been too long since Keith, Cathy, and company have had a proper release; they've only done two splits and a thing for SXSW since What It Takes To Move Forward in 2009.  It seems kind of cliche to say that a band changed the way I look at music, but empire! empire! really did back in 2008 when I bought their Year of the Rabbit 7".  A lot of bands suck as they progress, or at least disappoint coming off of an album as beloved by their fans as WITTMF was.  This is simply not the case here.  It's actually rather impressive how much the band gets accomplished in four songs right under eleven minutes.  Eschewing long builds and loud bursts, this 7" created for their Japanese tour in July is like a distillation of everything empire! empire! and the 90s emo from which they take cues (Penfold, Mineral, early Death Cab) into little emotional morsels that ache like growing pains.  It's a gnawing sadness that fills these songs: all the things you should've done, all the things you've tried to forget doing, all the pain you never felt like you could share.  Listening to the lyrics will only enhance the experience, which isn't always the case with emo bands; here, they're as important as the tunes that they're being delivered over.  You won't be disappointed.  Seriously, thank Robert Lowell and the others that inform Keith's lyrics; you can tell the dude was an English major.

Much like Algernon Cadwallader has been doing twinkle and noodly emo longer and better than all of their peers, empire! empire! has been reviving all the emo bands from the 90s that you've never heard longer than mediafire, music sharing blogs, bigcartel & bandcamp have been around, and doing it better than anyone else.  They're on another level; this release is only more proof.

Empire! Empire! (I Was the Lonely Estate) and Into It. Over It. - 2010 Split 7"

Band : Empire! Empire! (I Was the Lonely Estate) and Into It. Over It.
Album : Split
Release Year : 2010
Genre : Emo / Indie

Tracklist :
 Side A:
01.Empire! Empire! (I Was a Lonely Estate)- If We Had Found You Any Later, You Would Have Drowned

Side B:
01. Into It. Over It.- Buffalo, NY
02. Into It. Over It- Brenham, TX

Empire! Empire! do one song here, but I am pretty certain that anyone who likes Empire! Empire! will say "THIS IS NOT ENOUGH!". For one song of their delightful twinkly indiemo is not going to satiate. Just fling on the LP from last year again. That'll do you for an hour. Because 4 minutes of pretty guitars and Keith's man wails is but a fleeting taste of wintery sweetness. A snow flurry rather than 3 foot deep and a day off school. As ever, if you go weak at the knees for this thing, you can't fail to be delighted. It leaves you wondering how the band can evolve this sound, but I am pretty certain that whilst everyone who ever wanted indiemo to fuck off and die at the tail end of the 90s would sooner have their pinky finger dismembered than listen to anything as lily livered as this ever again, the few hundred folk that do appreciate it would more than welcome another full album's worth.

Empire! Empire! (I Was A Lonely Estate) - 2007 Year Of the Rabbit 7´´

Band : Empire! Empire! (I Was a Lonely Estate)
Album : Year Of the Rabbit 7´´
Release Year : 2007
Genre : Emo / Indie

Tracklist :
1. Year Of the Rabbit
2. Idk, My Bff Jill

Year of the Rabbit may well only be two songs, but if we lay the facts out on the table then you realise that this is more than just two songs. It's two fucking awesome songs which is way better. Empire! Empire! (I Was A Lonely Estate) may have a stupid name (in fact in a recent survey 9 out of 10 people said they do), but at the end of the day it's the music that counts. The band play a strain of indie/emo we've all heard before through artists like the Mike Kinsella's American Football, but to give credit where it's due they do it well, really well. In fact I'd say they're the crown fucking jewels of the genre if only to get you to check them out. Instrumentally, the band has a very clean sound; particularly the guitar which is subtly technical in style, whilst vocally it could almost be Kinsella crooning along the way the smooth vocals become almost another instrument as they weave and intermingle with the music. Basically you need this.

Empire! Empire! (I Was a Lonely Estate) - 2007 When The Sea Became A Giant

Band : Empire! Empire! (I Was a Lonely Estate)
Album : What It Takes To Move Forward
Release Year : 2009
Genre : Emo / Indie

Tracklist :
01. Our Love Has Made Us Pariahs
02. You Have To Believe That Life Is More Than The Sum Of It's Parts, Kiddo
03. Lilly, I Have Something Important To Tell You
04. They Will Throw Us To The Wolves
05. K.O. K.O. (The Most Of My Worries Are The Least Of Your Concerns)

The key word that comes to mind when listening to When the Sea Became a Giant is light. Everything is light. The vocal delivery is a deep reminder of the roots of emo, where a different kind of melancholy built its empire. The guitars let off an air of innocent intensity. The bass a resonating backdrop to a story never told. It’s been heard before, but never so well.
Empire! Empire! (I was a Lonely Estate) is an interesting collection of what seems to be a close family making music together. And we all know close families together making music makes a good time. Empire! Empire!, however, seem to try to touch upon something deeper, something more root-ful. The basic mechanics of emo are all displayed here. For example, the first song “Our Love has Made Us Pariahs” demonstrates many conjunctive moments between light but full band explosions and guitar matrimony. The guitars delve into clean, but in their own way very lyrical, engrossing leads. All which create a vacuum strong enough for the bass to fulfill.
What is most gripping about this release is that the recording was done by one man, Keith Latinen, with a guest vocal on the last track “K. O. K. O.” In a way you can tell, it is made up to be something more of a personal self confession that a collective truth. The whole of When the Sea Became a Giant is consistent and familiar as you listen to it, which in a way makes it unique from other emo efforts that could be comparable.
This release was independently released, however, it has caught the attention of many online music boards, including this one, obviously. What sells them so well is simple. They are playing something that has been hushed in the history of music. They make emo the genre it’s supposed to be. Many may argue they are hailing to a different genre, however, to the likes of this journalist, it is emo.

Empire! Empire! (I Was a Lonely Estate) - 2009 What It Takes To Move Forward

Band : Empire! Empire! (I Was a Lonely Estate)
Album : What It Takes To Move Forward
Release Year : 2009
Genre : Emo / Indie

Tracklist:
1. How to Make Love Stay
2. Keep What You Have Built Up Here
3. What Safe Means
4. It Happened Because You Left
5. Rally the Troops! Poke Holes In Their Defenses! Line Our Coffers With Their Coffins!
6. It's a Plague, and You're Invited
7. Everything Is Connected and Everything Matters (a Temporary Solution to a
Permanent Problem)
8. The Next Step to Regaining Control
9. With Your Greatest Fears Realized, You Will Not Be Comforted
10. I Am a Snail, and You Are a Pace I Cannot Match
11. An Idea Is a Greater Monument Than a Cathedral

There’s a bit of an indescribable quality at work here, much to Empire! Empire!’s advantage. While every piece of the music can be skillful and competent, rarely does it ever feel as natural and apposite as on What It Takes To Move Forward. The songwriting, the vocals, the guitar work and driving percussion, all of it adds up to a larger, greater aesthetic that’s so rarely achieved so early in a band’s career. Take it however you like, as a progression on the Midwestern-emo sound, simply as a lovable record with beautiful harmonies and movements, or even as a display of great emo vocals and lyrics. But no matter how you take it, What It Takes To Move Forward is a superb record that adds a new leg of interesting material to the race that Sunny Day Real Estate began.
