The 20th anniversary of Nirvana's Nevermind

Released in September 1991, Nirvana's sophomore album and major label debut elevated Kurt Cobain, Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl from a critically acclaimed Aberdeen, Washington, cult band to generational spokesmen who'd unwittingly created a cultural shift and musical touchstone. Rising to No. 1 the world over by year's end and ultimately selling over 30 million copies worldwide, Nevermind would come to be much more than one of the most successful and influential albums of its or any era. As the album that returned unaffected rock ’n’ roll integrity and passion to the top of the charts, Nevermind would prove a singular inspiration to fans and musicians alike over the last two decades--and will undoubtedly do so for generations to come.

This is my favorite band and favorite album of all time, to celebrate its 20th anniversary lot of musicians/artist or magazine perform to cover all the songs on Nevermind. Well here's the view of them. Enjoy!!!

SPIN's August issue pays tribute to the 20th anniversary of Nirvana's Nevermind, and as part of our package we tapped some of our favorite contemporary artists to cover the influential album's 13 songs, in their original order. The download is called Newermind, and it's our gift to you. We were happy that two of Kurt Cobain's personal faves -- the Meat Puppets and the Vaselines, both of whom Nirvana famously covered during their MTV Unplugged taping -- joined our effort. Below you'll find the complete album tracklist, with reflections from each contributing artist. -SpinMagazine

WHY NIRVANA?
As a radio station we do not get the chance to pay respect to some of the great bands we play on the radio, let alone a landmark American music recording like Nevermind. The basic idea was approaching both local and national bands for this tribute album and asking them the question, “If you woke up one morning and wrote a song off of the Nevermind album, what would the song sound like?” The results are found in this download.
We hope you enjoy what the artists on this tribute created from the original blueprint. -x103

Various Artists - 2007 Our Impact Will Be Felt : A Tribute To Sick Of It All

Tracklist :
01. Rise Against - Built To Last
02. Unearth - Clobberin' Time/What's Going On
03. Hatebreed - Ratpack
04. Madball - Give Respect
05. Bleeding Through - Truth
06. Comeback Kid - Step Down
07. Ignite - Cease Fire
08. Bouncing Souls - Good Lookin' Out
09. Pennywise - My Life
10. Kill Your Idols - Friends Like You

13. Most Precious Blood - Alone
14. First Blood - Just Look Around
15. Stretch Arm Strong - Busted
16. Walls Of Jericho - Us Vs Them
17. The Suicide Machines - Goatless
18. Bane - We Stand Alone
19. No Redeeming Social Value - World Full Of Hate
20. Napalm Death - Who Sets The Rules

Through two decades Sick of It All have become a New York hardcore institution, inspiring countless hardcore, punk and metal bands alike along the way. If one was unable to follow SOIA all through their history, then evidence is still abundant on their 20-song tribute album, Our Impact Will Be Felt, where a number of devastating performances are turned in from friends and followers.
Rise Against are no strangers to blistering, powerful opening tracks, and it's just as evident in their stunning version of "Built to Last." Not only is it arguably more intense than the original, but Tim McIlrath absolutely nails the more melodious bridge with his smooth, clean singing. The melodic hardcore ambassadors not only usher in things wonderfully, but they provide what's perhaps the best track on Our Impact.
Another mighty standout is Comeback Kid's "Step Down," who somehow adds an upbeat party tone to the song. Apparently this was new-ish vocalist Andrew Neufeld's first recorded output with the band in his new role, but he sounds relatively comfortable with his bandmates as they shout along the raucous gang vocals. That band's biggest influence, Bane, hardly phones in their own contribution; "We Stand Alone" sounds better than most of Bane's catalog, as the band pushes it along at an urgent, mean clip, making for another of Our Impact's best.

Elsewhere, Unearth's brawny metalcore is toned down just a bit to highlight the metallic overtones of "Clobberin' Time / What's Going On"; the band shuns worries their heavy outset would be overwhelming by simply keeping things a little more straightforward. Even the normally deliberate Hatebreed blasts through "Rat Pack" at a frenetic pace. Ignite balances aggression with their super melodic vibes perfectly on "Cease Fire." Surprisingly, Pennywise's blast of "My Life" is one of the tribute's more noteworthy moments, with the band nailing the tempo changes and burly gang vocals bubbling up. Kill Your Idols' "Friends Like You" is delivered nicely, but the slight change in production value disrupts the album's flow a bit. Sepultura's "Scratch the Surface"? Not bad at all. Most Precious Blood's "Alone" is unsurprisingly solid. Stretch Arm Strong's "Busted" finds the band matching that oddly spazzy, rambling feel. Walls of Jericho completely ignore their normal stylistic vibes in their valiant effort in "Us vs. Them." Save for Battle Hymns, Suicide Machines have rarely sounded more intense than on "Goatless," definitely kicking it up a few notches.
Sour notes might include Madball and Bleeding Through's half-baked submissions. And while there's no questioning the influence Sick of It All had on No Redeeming Social Value, their cut of "World Full of Hate" is just bland; following them is Napalm Death, an interesting choice, but one that provides relative white noise in the form of the muddily recorded "Who Sets the Rules" -- too bad, as these are the tribute's last two tracks.
Admittedly, a couple of Sick of It All's albums are missing representation here and Our Impact Will Be Felt certainly ends on a couple less than overwhelming notes. However, mostly thanks to its gang of characters Our Impact Will Be Felt admirably captures the influence and importance Sick of It All has blessed hardcore punk with in years gone by.

Genre : Post-Hardcore / Punk / Hardcore

Tracklist :
01 Senses Fail - Institutionalized (Suicidal Tendencies, 1983)
02 Taking Back Sunday - Suburban Home / I Like Food (Descendents, 1982/1981)
03 My Chemical Romance - Astro Zombies (The Misfits, 1982)
04 Emanuel - Search and Destroy (The Stooges, 1973)
05 Saves The Day - Sonic Reducer (The Dead Boys, 1977)
06 Dropkick Murphys - Who Is Who (The Adolescents, 1981)
07 Thrice - Seeing Red / Screaming At A Wall (Minor Threat, 1981)
08 The Bled - House of Suffering (Bad Brains, 1986)
09 Hot Snakes - Time To Escape (Government Issue, 1981)
10 Fall Out Boy - Start Today (Gorilla Biscuits, 1989)
11 Alkaline Trio - Wash Away (TSOL, 1982)
12 Thursday - Ever Fallen in Love (With Someone You Shouldn't've) (Buzzcocks, 1978)
13 From Autumn To Ashes - Let's Have A War (Fear, 1982)
14 Rise Against - Fix Me (Black Flag, 1978)

Skateboard culture took hold of California in the late '70s and early '80s, where kids in cities like Santa Monica and Los Angeles defined freestyle skating from the ground up. Of course, at the time, music was just exciting. Punk rock was fragmenting, and bands like Black Flag on the West Coast and Minor Threat in the East were forging the new rhythms of hardcore. It's that sound Tony Hawk's American Wasteland taps for its soundtrack. But instead of putting together the usual comp of classic punk and hardcore, contemporary bands have been asked to contribute covers. Naturally the results vary. But for the most part it's a solid set, both for fans of the original songs and the current bands covering them. Buddy Nielsen really nails Mike Muir's apathetic teen intonation on Senses Fail's version of "Institutionalized," "All I wanted was a Pepsi! And she wouldn't give it to me!" My Chemical Romance are a predictable choice for the Misfits' "Astro Zombies," while Dropkick Murphys muscle ably through the Adolescents' "Who Is Who." Most if not all of the contributors are entirely faithful to their source material -- Thrice even go so far as to distort and treble-ize everything in their medley of Minor Threat's "Seeing Red/Screaming at a Wall," just to nail that D.C. 1981 feel. It's also nice to see bands like T.S.O.L., Government Issue, and Gorilla Biscuits get exposure alongside the usual entries from the Stooges and Descendents. (Hot Snakes, in particular, do a great job with GI's "Time to Escape.") Rise Against, who already covered "Nervous Breakdown" for Lords of Dogtown, must be the official stand-ins for Black Flag when it comes to skateboarding and the history of U.S. punk music: they end Tony Hawk's American Wasteland with all 54 sneering seconds of Flag's "Fix Me."

The Killer In You - 2005 A Tribute To The Smashing Pumpkins

Band : Various Artists
Album : The Killer In You - A Tribute To The Smashing Pumpkins
Release Year : 2005
Genre : Post-Hardcore / Emo

Tracklist :
1. Roses Are Red - Cherub Rock
2. A Thorn For Every Night
3. Poison The Well - Soma
4. Emanuel - Mayonnaise
5. Amor For Sleep - Today
6. Hopesfall - Eye
7. A Static Lullaby - The Everlasting Gaze
8. Vaux - 1979
9. 32 Leaves - Zero
10. Murder By Death - We Only Come Out At Night
11. Eighteen Visions - Quiet

People are correct in fearing tribute albums since the songs cannot be evaluated but in the context of their original versions. This makes a Smashing Pumpkins tribute that much more difficult since the band was not only phenomenal (disclosure: I'm a huge SP fan) but also because Billy Corgan was famously (some would say infamously) over-controlling and meticulous during recording, leading to impeccable albums. Hence, if a cover is to be "good" or successful (at least), it cannot simply aim to replicate the original (impossible in this case); it must bring in something different (in most cases unique to the band covering the song) that recasts the song in a new, possibly innovative, light.
What does this mean for this collection? Exactly what most people fear: it is populated with dull renditions of great SP songs performed with some measure of competence but ultimately failing to entertain even on some level of nostalgia. The problem, of course, it that they are trying to emulate the originals which, while flattering to Corgan and Co., I'm sure, simply does not work. This is not surprising, as these are mostly forgettable bands with questionable aptitude. The songs are simply out of their league. Then there's Murder By Death.
Murder By Death avoids doing precisely what the rest of the bands do here, which is simply rehashing the original with a few screams here and a painfully cheesy voice inflection there. They instead make it their own. Surprisingly, the fist time I listened to their track I actually heard Murder By Death and not some band pretending to be the Pumpkins. The usual MBD strings complement the song well, "We Only Come Out At Night" feels right at place with their newest album, and the narrative structure of the song suits their own style perfectly. The original was fascinating because of the interplay between its bouncy, playful melody and its otherwise dark lyrics. MBD takes the song all the way to its natural conclusion by making it even darker and somber yet retaining its strange sense of hope, albeit with a sort of helpless resignation to it. The song is cool all over again. And that's what a good cover should do.
In other words, mostly disposable dreck except for Murder By Death's cover of "We Only Come Out At Night." It single-handedly takes the entire album from 1 star to 4. That is to say, the album is worth it just for this one song, it really is that good.
