Loma Prieta is a San Francisco screamo band, featuring members of Archeopteryx, Punch, Sailboats and us, haunted bodies. Loma Prieta play great spazzy, chaotic, and at times melodic music similar to bands such as Orchid, Off-Minor, and Ampere. Flourishes of melody show up from time to time, giving me vibes of bands such as Funeral Diner and City of Caterpillar. Here is all of their earlier recorded output.

Formed in 2005, Loma Prieta have been a mainstay of the Bay Area hardcore community for more than half a decade. In that time they have released four 12 inch records and two 7 inch records mostly on their own label, Discos Huelga. They have also toured the U.S., Japan, Canada, and Mexico numerous times, all while members play in several other hardcore bands (Punch, Beau Navire, Us Haunted Bodies).

While Loma Prieta’s sound is difficult to describe, it is clear that they come from the rich tradition of creative Bay Area hardcore bands such as Mohinder, Funeral Diner, Bread and Circuits, Yaphet Kotto, and Indian Summer. Eschewing sub-genres in favor of organically writing songs that are personally fulfilling, each Loma Prieta record is substantially different from the last. Nonetheless, Loma Prieta have managed to forge a distinctive form of expression that is entirely their own.

For “I.V.” the band’s Deathwish debut, Loma Prieta once again worked with longtime collaborator Jack Shirley (Atomic Garden Studio). With his guidance Loma Prieta tracked to tape 12 songs intensely emotional songs. Written during a time of great personal suffering and transition for the band "I.V." is the creative culmination of those collective experiences. From the opening breath of “Fly by Night”, Loma Prieta crash and bang melody and discord together into one beautiful work of art. This grinding theme continues throughout "I.V." in stunning songs like the aptly named three parter "Trilogy 4, 5, and 6". Creating a powerful and unpredictable ebb and flow to their emotional outpouring. As the dust settles on the distorted haze in closer "Diamond Tooth", an artistic coherency and clarity emerges that can only be described as Loma Prieta. A new kind of melancholy chaos that should be familiar, yet challenging, to those who enjoy bands like Love Lost But Not Forgotten, Pg. 99, La Quiete, and the ilk.

Punch and Lorma Prieta are two incredible California based hardcore/punk/screamo bands. Punch play female fronted angry hardcore/punk and Loma Prieta play dark and omnious screamo influenced hardcore. Punch covers Loma Prieta's song Worn Path and Loma Prieta covers Punch's song Don't Start. My only complaint is that this is only two songs. -ER

Coming out of the primordial ooze in 2008 is Loma Prieta, a band whose previous releases were no more than Ampere ripoffs with a dash of Toru Okada's theatrics and melodrama - not an admirable mix. However, with the release of Last City, Loma Prieta feel like a band who have spent quite a bit of time in the lab perfecting their brand of recombination (or whatever metaphor will work with my now worn-thing analogy). The first and best part of the new mixture is that the dramatics are gone. The voice-cracking screaming has been replaced by post-pubescent distorted screaming and the propensity for slapstick variety has been reeled in. In its place is a sound that is certainly diverse and is a pastiche of many different influences, but always has a level-headed forward propulsion. Loma Prieta are not going to leap from a thrashy section to a melodic, poppy section but are going to travel across a gradient of those two sounds over an entire song, or maybe overlap the two in an interesting and original way. All of the diverse influences that give Loma Prieta their distinctive, Frankenstinian flavor are present, but they are all properly sewn together instead of tossed haphazardly into a minute-long blip coming through my speakers.

While Last City is not a genre redefining album (there are still obvious traces of Ampere and You and I here - but what better bands to rip off?), it certainly is an excellent album. Its 22-minute runtime makes good on Loma Prieta's claim that "our LP is your EP," and feels like a complete, if bite-sized unit of music. Ultimately, in a genre where recombination is being done with increasingly disappointing results, it's nice to hear a band that "gets it." Loma Prieta have produced a vital and compelling emotional hardcore album in 2008 that unabashedly invokes its predecessors while still fighting the genetic dilution that has plagued emo in recent memory.

The categorizing of Loma Prieta’s newest LP may grow to be a bit of a misnomer; the emotional characteristics are still as present as they ever were, see Dark Mountain, but how they are arranged feel more fashioned towards the hardcore and in some instances the grindcore crowd for lack of a better term emo powerviolence. Thunderous melodies and distortion that would drive White Noise enthusiasts crazy Life / Less becomes one of the messiest releases of the year – and I love it. How do we find beauty in something that is so messy? For the unabashed, art is completely subjective and one man’s trash is almost certain to be another’s treasure. This is not meant to consider Life / Less trash as it is far from such a generality. Nonetheless it is meant to evoke the notion that for a majority of its seventeen minute length Life / Less is a screamo rendition of “Stomp”. Though things are hardly as discernible as the mega Broadway hit; I imagine the intended static/fuzz throughout the album is a thanking to their 90’s contemporaries (basically any act signed to Gravity Records). Albeit, when things finally do crystalize on the airwaves it elicits feelings of a faint reality, take notice to the subway engine screeching across the tracks after the abrasive sixty seconds that precede it on “Dark Mtn”.

Dark Mountain isn’t an album you can just forge an opinion on in one listen. On first listen for me, I was completely bored with the album, probably because I had such high expectations for it after their surprisingly amazing Last City. I say surprisingly amazing because before Last City, I was not really impressed with this band much at all. Most of their EPs before this, such as Our LP is your EP, was in a nutshell just a poor attempt at Ampere. The songs were jumpy and discordant, and the vocals were out of this world bad. Then out of nowhere, they release Last City, completely blowing everyone’s thought of whom they were and what they could do. Dark Mountain further expands on the progression that they started with Last City.

Clocking in at 15 minutes long, it’s almost sad that the album is this short. Released only 10 months after Last City, it’s impressive to see such an improvement in the band in that short of time. At first I thought this album was just a watered-down Last City, but after giving it many more listens, the album really shines through and surpasses Last City as Loma Prieta’s best album to date. They have picked up their game on every aspect of the album and even if it’s 7 minutes shorter then Last City, it’s still a nice progression to see in such a short time. I really hope that Loma Prieta takes a little bit more time on their next full length though, for if the jump they made from Last City to Dark Mountain was this noticeable, then their next album could possibly be something out of this world.
