Hats off, Gentlemen was 5 piece melodic hardcore/screamo group from Vancouver, British Columbia. They started out as a Saetia cover band and played a lot of shows and had one record. They shared members with Sunday Morning Paper, and they broke up in summer 2009. Enjoy!!

Reviver is pretty awesome and not just because their name is a palindrome. Hailing from Salt Lake City, Reviver are another band riding off the Defeater wave and etch near turgid hardcore execution with subtle hints of emo characteristics. Much like Touche Amore demonstrated last year with their swift execution and no holds barred approach, Reviver too show they can be ominous within the confines of spastic melodic hardcore. Much of this debut EP is spent building an idea and perfecting the implementation.

Potential Wasteland is a rugged circle with a smooth center. Beginning with the intro track the band rely on their raw production to tailor the foreground of their sound. This comes as no surprise as the title to the effort is a dismal portrayal of life. A clear concept that revolves around the bands sound and inhibits the lyrics. Hearing the emotion drain from “Traditions” is a hark to the effort put forth; lead vocalist Matt pour out lines of “We’re destroyers of our own fate / We’ve all gone mad / And we’re taking the world with us / We’re the masters of our own fate” which really dries the paint on the picture Reviver are painting.

Aiding to the subversive lyrical content comes strong musicianship that hears itself switching the mood on the drop of a dime. Best noted on “Potential” comes heavy handed palm muted riffs that accentuate the melodic bridge of militant “rahhhh’s” perfectly. There’s pure quality shown in the unpolished instruments (packed mostly in both guitars) yet sacrificing no intensity and matching the emotion of their leader. “Undefined” does a nice job of situating a pre-storm mood before the rage, and the dissonance incorporated facilitates exemplary layers upon layers of aggression.

As with most EP’s Potential Wasteland is flawed by its length. While it reaches its desired platform with the closing tracks “Potential” and “Wasteland” (tricky, eh?) it hinders the bands capabilities. But if this release serves any purpose it’s that Reviver know how build the tension as well as expectation. Their next release should see them reach a level of a young More Than Life or Touche Amore. -fromtheinside

Aviator is an emotional hardcore band from Boston, MA, formed in late 2009. With a self-produced, self-released & self-titled EP out as of Spring 2010 and a split released in November 2010 with My Fictions, Aviator is definitely a force to watch grow in the New England hardcore scene.
Aviator consists of vocalist TJ Copello, guitarist Mat Morin, guitarist/vocalist Michael Russo, drummer Aviv Marotz and bassist Mike Moschetto, who took the place of original bassist Tommy Regan in 2011.
This new EP called i'm not the lonely one, it's excellent music paired with raw emotion that just proves they love what they are putting out.  They are taking preorders at their bandcamp, where you can also stream all the songs.  Just enough to get blood flowing down into your no region. LESTER FREAMON from Las Vegas with their debut 7inch. A total of 4 songsfound on this small but fine piece of vinyl. 4 songs that simply show the joy theband has while playing.
Many parts of the songs are very reminiscent of Kidcrash, Caravels or even on old Hot Cross stuff.
The highlight is the song"Oh my goblet!". A very atmospheric beginning that ends in a classic posthardcoresong. Driving drums, accompanied by a bony bass and twoabsolutely dynamic guitars.
A debut, that couldn't have been better. It will beinteresting what comes from this young band in the future.

Mahria is emotive hardcore heavily influenced by bands such as Yaphet Kotto, Kidcrash, Loma Prieta, La Quiete, Celeste, Orchid, Beach House, Joy Division, Converge, and Hiretsukan. they're also all about the many covers of "Alec Eiffel". Well, you can imagine how the output sounds like!!

The Usual are a Hagerstown, MD based band who play an amazing style of emotive hardcore/screamo that's sure to please fans of We Were Skeletons, Loma Prieta, L'antietam, Lizards Have Personalities, and Pianos Become The Teeth. This split came out recently as part of the pair's partial tour of the US in August. Since the bands have been friends for a while and their sounds complement each other well the idea of a split is perfect. With React With Protest also heavily involved in helping both bands they are naturally putting this out, along with the guys from Adiago 830. A fairly minimalistic 7'' in terms of artwork and packaging but this is made up for by the sheer crushing heaviness contained within the record.

June Paik are a band that blew me away when I first heard them but failed to retain my enthusiasm as time went on, as they seemed to repeat the same sort of formula but not as well. I was told, however, that their song on this split is one of their best yet and I am very happy to say that I concur. I can tell it's them playing but they have constructed a song very different to their recent 10'', with a definite increase in heaviness and ferocity. They still include their trademark instrumental parts but initially there is a teasingly short part before the heaviness kicks back in. Towards the end there is a bit more of their traditional melodic and epic feel. The only thing I don't like is how the song fades out in volume, it cheapens the track somewhat. Other than that it's great and I hope the band can come up with some more new songs with this sort of quality.

Battle Of Wolf 359 conjure up two songs on the flip side which are as solid as ever. Further crushing hardcore which also dabbles in instrumental melody at times. Lyrics are about the recent change in British government and foreign conflict. I am very interested to see where this band go next; they have a fairly original sound, numerous records out that I listen to a fair amount and are phenomenal live. I just hope they can keep evolving and keep sounding fresh.

Think about all of the emo bands in existence that all want to sound like Neil Perry and Orchid and what not, and just fail. Think about all the bands that try to mix more melodic Euro-styled emo with post rock and just fail. Now imagine if someone took that classic, "emo violence," sound and texture and successfully mixed it with a post-rock sound, without sounding like an Envy or Anomie clone with long-winded Explosions In The Sky-esque interludes. Yep, that's what we've got on our hands here.

This has been in my last.fm recommendations for pretty much as long as I've had a last.fm, and I just never picked it up. Maybe it's because so much of what I used to listen to sucked that I didn't want anymore that sounds like that, who knows, but I'm glad I finally checked these guys out. When you throw on the record, you're assaulted with Neil Perry worship to the point that you think it actually is Neil Perry if you're not paying attention, dissonant harmonized riffs, chugging, almost melodic breakdowns, melodic breaks, raspy vocals, these Krauts have it all down. Then they build it into something so much more than you were expecting. The instrumental segments of this album are beautiful, in that entrancing and moody fashion that the modern emo scene seems to have lost.

The main issue with this EP is that it's nothing new. It doesn't stray too far past that common complaint that most screamo sounds the same. It does sound the same, but it still stands out, I assure you. So if you're a fan of wistful melodic Euro acts like Mihai Edrisch and Suis La Lune, and a fan of more intense and dissonant classic American acts, this is for you. Honest to God, this would be a 5/5 if Orchid and Neil Perry didn't already exist.

June Paik are an emotive hardcore band from Donauwörth in Germany. The latter of which drew their already dark and intense style more towards epic build ups and heavy droning passages much in the vein of mid-90's Canadian hardcore bands such as Union of Uranus and One-Eyed God Prophecy, and also a song on each the Emo Apocalypse and Emo Armageddon compilations from React With Protest.

Structurally, June Paik is your typical and exemplary emo album. Up and down she groans, beginning with a sorrowful guitar lead in "Und Wieder" only to erupt into furious bombast, and then right back to nothing but a mournful guitar. The song continues in this ebb and flow fashion with a few sinister riffs thrown in, until a somewhat post-rockesque finish keeps it from boiling over to create a superlative sense of tension. "Aleska" begins roughly in the same fashion and continues on its treacherous path. Up to this point you may have noticed how premium the guitar is on June Paik but it rarely ever ceases to steal the show in a wonderful way. Guitarist Sebastion drenches the songs in meloncholic guitar passages and tight, controlled chaos. He also uses tremolo picking well during these flashes of chaos to create more sense of speed and anguish. Truth be told, June Paik doesn't differentiate from this formula (albeit a winning one), though the constant pounding of despair makes this an incredible and draining experience.

There is one song that is worth noting individually. "Grobes Rund" is incredible on its own without the mammoth album backing it, and stands as the best song overall. A rather dark intro which produces the muffled sound of a child playing, showing the innocence of childhood, explodes with a bit more bite this time around. It's clear June Paik are strict in their songwriting but "Grobes Rund" is the best represntation of the albums sound.

Well, the note above is the translate from Russian, i don't understand what it means exactly!! Never heard about this two bands before, these guys came from somewhere in Russia, and i'm so excited to give them a listen. Well, try it!! they're good for sure!!

Carrion Spring are a Portland, Oregon based emotive hardcore/posthardcore band who play a great style of music that falls somewhere between Jokes era Kidcrash and The Saddest Landscape. I was really impressed by the twelve new songs that are on Carrion Spring's latest LP entitled A Short History Of Decay. Carrion Spring really need a label. I was looking forward to hearing this – new screamo from Austin, TX. Great name. Unfortunately as soon as the first twiddle came in at (literally) the 0:00 mark, I knew what I was in for: absolute twiddle overkill. Unfortunately, when a band twiddles this much in one track it calls to mind the shit stained Big Scary Monsters scene and gets an insta-thumbs down in my mind. Fuck it, I’ll hear them out. It’s only a seven. What did strike me about this first track is that the vocals are pretty cool and remind me of some of the 2000 revival junk I was getting into around the 2000 mark (think the famous three from France maybe). Unfortunately the twiddles were too hard to ignore for me to even almost think about backing it. The second track, ‘Moment In Time’, isn’t as heavy on the twiddle (its still there sadly) but it’s a tiny bit more riffy/chordy and I can get behind it a bit more although nothing in particular stood out to me. ‘Summer of Distance’ hit me off-the-bat as Damezumari worship. Decent. So, unfortunately this fell short of my expectations purely because of the twiddling. The last track has a Sed Non Satiata singing bit around the half way mark that it could do without and the rest of it, on first listen at least struck me as pretty unremarkable. 

All in all, this EP is a pretty mixed bag. Everything post-2000 seems to be in here. It’ll be interesting to see what sound this band bag as their own in the future. Here’s hoping it has less to do with track one and more to do with track three! Could be worth it. -collective-zine
