"You, Me, & The Violence" is the latest masterpiece from Birds In Row. The album explodes out of the gates with "Pilori", a sonic crash and bang statement of personal independence among with society's faults and fractures. Birds In Row then continue down this road, expressing disdain and struggle in songs like "Cages", "Guillotine", and "Walter Freeman". All of them musically harboring a beautiful tangle of emotional vocals and distortion. And just when it feels like the album is almost too overpowering, Birds In Row unfurl a moment of musical clarity in "Last Last Chance", a haunting guitar and vocal break. Their collective control of their dynamics is masterful work. "You, Me, & The Violence" and "Grey Hair" are near perfect examples of this, naturally shifting between searing and serene in tone. If you weren't in awe of Birds In Row in the first eleven songs, the twelve minute closer "Lovers Have Their Say" will leave you floored, as it is an ominous epic that artistically unwinds in truly spectacular fashion.

Barren Womb are a noise punk/hardcore duo hailing from Trondheim, Norway. Formed November 2011 by Timo Silvola and Tony Gonzahl after the disbandment of their former band, Like Rats From A Sinking Ship, Barren Womb blend hardcore punk with elements of black metal, grindcore and country.
On the Origin of Fæces Containing 8 intense protest songs lodged.

Two guys who used to be in Like Rats From A Sinking Ship makes up this noise duo from Norway. Have to admit that I was never a fan of lrfass neither on record or live so I did not have high hopes for this when I first put this on. Press-description was short but managed to include ‘protest songs’ and this combined with the EP title and track titles like ‘Less is Roger Moore’ and ‘I Have a Hobbit to Support’ did not lift my spirit neither. Have no lyrics so we will just have to take their word that these are indeed protest songs.
Musically this is far better than lrfass. They got rid of the super annoying synth elements and have stripped their music down bridging noise, metal and more punk elements together with a thick and heavy sound that suits them good. At times they are quite melodic (‘Are we werewolves yet?’) and other times they are playing a whole lot faster bordering towards straight up hardcore (‘I have a hobbit to support’). They are at their best when they slow down and play as ugly as they can (‘A matter of life and death metal’). Over the course of the 8 songs though, they are losing my attention as this gets to generic. Norway has been spoiled with bands in this genre lately with bands like Noxagt and Årabrot and although Barren Womb do a decent attempt this just shows they have a long way to go if they aim to step up to the throne. -Kjetil Holstad (collectivezine)

Alpinist is a Dark-Hardcore/Crust four-piece band from Münster, GERMANY.

It’s easy to ride Alpinist off as a novelty. Truly it is, as the band hasn't really made any waves in the states. Being fairly young, and originating from Germany, Alpinist haven't truly grabbed the attention of many. Their oppressive sound combined with an angry aesthetic doesn’t exactly do much in the way of creating anything revolutionary, which hasn't helped their odds of breaking out. With "Lichtlarem" being their sophomore effort, the band has a lot prove.

That being said, “Lichtlaerm” is stunningly solid. Surprisingly so, considering the general inexperienced nature of the band. It’s frenetic nature somehow feels as if it’s been polished to a sheen, and everything seems incredibly well organized and well thought out. Its crusty aesthetic creates an all around dense atmosphere, which adds a little bit of character to an otherwise chaotic and unruly album. This is where the album truly shines, in its brazen yet wonderfully refined and tightened sound. Because of this, “Lichtlaerm” is heavy but perfectly contained, offering up a bevy of dense and crushing instrumentals , complimented by some rather intense and passionate screams.

Along with the wonderfully solid sound, the production is also pretty fantastic, which helps bolster the whole affair down. While not perfect, the crude nature of the sound adds a lot to the album's feel, piling up even more character to “Lichtlaerm.” The drums are crystal clear in their tenacious crashing, and the guitars are tuned to a fine degree of heaviness and cleanliness. Everything works and sounds as it should, and the product is excellent because of it. And while a little on the grating side, the album sports some pretty decent vocals. It’s obvious they guy is putting a lot behind them, and the exuberance shines clear through something, that by all rights, should sound fairly obnoxious. Regardless, his raw emotion gives the album a certain genuine feeling, which helps the album feel a little more personal.

This unabashed emotion resonates throughout the work's entirety, making nearly every song stand out to some extent. And while it may take a few listens to appreciate, “Lichtlaerm” offers an impressive and diverse track list. There’s loads of variety throughout, making everything incredibly interesting and fresh. Aside from a few homogeneous portions of rather bland selections, the album makes very few missteps. “Licht” and “Yarncarrier And Break” offer more instrumental songs, with a heavier emphasis on mood and atmosphere, while showcasing the band's more subtle songwriting abilities. After all, Alpinist are more than a group of angry young men making angry sounding music. Rather, these tracks highlight the more creative aspects of the band's sound. Situated in the middle, the two tracks anchor the album down with a fine transition change, that is before the chaos re-ensues. ”Deliberate” is an excellent opener, as it starts off very menacing, but quickly leads into a brash and rapid combination of riffs and cymbal crashes. Chaotic and brash, the track is a great intro. “Neverest” boasts the albums most fierce and interesting track. Featuring some great guitar work and vocal interplay, the track is tremendously solid, and an all around standout. The mid-section boast a wonderful guitar piece, which truly makes its presence known in respect to the surrounding maelstrom.

With “Lichtlaerm,” Alpinist are out to show the world that they’ve got something to prove, and prove it they do. With incredibly intense and vivacious material accentuating their crusty-hardcore aesthetic, Alpinist demand to be on your radar.

Originally issued in 1999, We Are the Romans was Botch’s second full-length, but to the chagrin of many, was also their last. Though the breakup occurred two years after the release of this, their swansong, the Washingtonians left such an indelible mark on the scene that their concepts would turn up later in the music of bands like Norma Jean, among myriad others. Thankfully, Botch seem steadfast in their decision to remain disbanded, and rather than reunite, former members continue to forge ahead with new, musical endeavors such as Minus the Bear, Onalaska, Roy, and These Arms Are Snakes. After all, a reunion could result in a comeback album, which would inevitably pale in relation to previous installments in their discography. Speaking of their catalog, the remastered Deluxe Edition of We Are the Romans is the finale of the Botch re-release treatment that covered 061502, Unifying Themes Redux, and American Nervoso. So fitting it is that their quintessential album has been expanded by one whole disc, which offers most of the recordings in demo form, and a few live tracks. It goes without saying that “To Our Friends in the Great White North” and “Mondrian Was a Liar” are no less hard-hitting nor infectious as they were seven years ago – prior to the alarming surge of metalcore and post-hardcore. Other intricate, raging numbers like “Transition from Persona to Object,” “C. Thomas Howell as the ‘Soul Man,’” “Saint Matthew Returns to the Womb,” “Frequency Ass Bandit,” and “I Wanna Be a Sex Symbol on My Own Terms” are convoluted yet fully comprehensible, though a mid-paced song such as “Swimming the Channel vs. Driving the Chunnel” possesses a sound that the Neur-Isis niche is now known for.  When discussing We Are the Romans, one need mention the 10-minute “Man the Ramparts,” which is the longest, most climactic of the lot. The midsection chanting is unique, but more importantly, effective too.

As noted above, the second disc has a wealth of demos up for grabs, and surprisingly, each is of high quality in both production and execution. Further endearing is the fact that studio banter personalizes each song. Otherwise, there are no major changes except for the significantly shorter, chant-free “Man the Ramparts.” The four live renditions are satisfying, if muddy or flimsy, and Botch fans will definitely recognize “Vietmam” from their sole EP An Anthology of Dead Ends and “Hutton’s Great Heat Engine” from their debut American Nervoso.

Despite the asinine song titles – that part of the quartet’s trickle-down influence I could do without – We Are the Romans is required listening for anyone who has even a casual affinity for this particular style. While metalcore has a less than favorable image these days, and though there are anomalies to the following claim, there was once a time when it could be played innovatively and with verve. Botch’s catalog proves just that.

American Womanhood is a Baltimore, Maryland hardcore band. The band was founded in early 2010 with a desire to perform and record fast, chaotic, heavy music without resorting to cliche breakdowns or other generic metal stereotypes. American Womanhood loves playing basement shows and small venues. Floors always trump stages. And you never know what singers Marc Dyer and Asa Gillis will do in the midst of a set.

This band is so fucking good, playing from mathrock to mathcore to gringcore to chaos!!! If anyone here have their first album "An Ungrateful Ghost Gets the Gift of Life" please let me know, cause i can't find it inside the net!!! :D

Throats definitely takes things to the next level with their debut full-length. In the past, this hardcore band from across the Atlantic has been hailed pretty highly. “Converge on acid,” the Gallows front man called them, and Throats was also pegged as one NME’s “bands to look out for.” That’s pretty hefty for a band that’s only released a few demos and splits. In my opinion, Throats manages to withstand the expectations that have been built around them like a moat; they don’t necessarily hurdle the moat in a flying leap, per se, but they get to the other side safely and surely. What I’m trying to say is- Throats isn’t without faults, of course. The album is a bit short-lived. Clocking in at less than 20 minutes, Throats never quite get a chance to cement their style and make their presence known. Throats is certainly dynamic, but this inhibits their ability to create a truly memorable experience as the album tends to drift.

Now that the nasty part (ephemeral as it is) is out of the way, let’s move on to the diverting aspect, shall we? For starters, it becomes clear right away that Throats is a fierce and even harrowing experience. To revisit the allegory that began this review- Throats is a rough and unrelenting band that exerts an incredible amount of sheer energy. The opening chords of “Wake” aren’t very telling; deliberate and slow, this is as much a break as Throats is willing to give. For a more revealing picture of Throats, fast forward to “*** Life” and feast your ears on the collision of incomprehensible screams (a la hardcore punk style) and highly technical riffs. The more noteworthy moments, though, come in the variation on Throats, the times they differ from the tried-and-true formula of loud/abrasive + loud/abrasive + loud/abrasive = loud/abrasive. All but one of the songs fit into intense 2 minute stampedes, and that is the ambitious closer. Listen to “Oaken/Wait” (not too many times though- I don’t want your ears to fall off) and hear Throat’s ability to construct a 7-minute epic. With layers and riffs galore, the song even includes a sample in the background that eventually erupts to a woman’s shrill screams before tailspinning down into a valley of minimal guitar strums to smooth over the damage done by Throats.

Alpinist is a band that hasn’t been heard or experienced by enough people. They hail from Münster, Germany and play a style of crust (a sludgy brand of hardcore punk) tinged with screamo. Minus.Mensch (2009) marks the bands’ first full-length release. It’s full of raw energy, impressive transitions and melancholic dissonance. To be honest, I was expecting the production on this album to be of a lot lesser quality, but it is in fact more than sufficient. The harrowing intro riff in ‘Nighttime Poet, Daytime Dead’ is a great way to kick off the album. It builds beautifully and introduces you into the marvelously emotional landscape created by the band; something most listeners will be thankful for. The band has many things going for it, and the drummer is no exception. Hendrik is really a stand-out on this disc, as he supplies lots of impressive and tasteful fills. Vocals come in the form of a three-pronged attack, with both guitarists as well as the bassist providing screams and growls. I think the utilization of more than one harsh vocalist can be redundant and perhaps cliche at times, but such is not the case here. It works beautifully, actually, as the dynamic between medium-ranged, from-the-chest shouts and throaty growls creates a consistent contrast. It’s a vocal approach that can be compared to Circle Takes the Square in a sense, only with more focus and a little less chaos.

There’s really no weak tracks on Minus.Mensch, each track brings just as much intensity as the last. For every crushing section full of distressed screaming and filthy sludginess from the band, there seems to be a more melodic section waiting right around the corner where the band really succeeds in creating that emotional landscape I referred to earlier. This landscape reaches its purest and arguably most impressive form during the emotionally charged outro track, aptly named ‘Outro’. It’s a very impressive instrumental, which builds for the first minute and a half before exploding into a gorgeous melodic part at around 1:45. One gripe I have with the outro track is that I would’ve liked to hear some sort of vocals, at least one emotional ‘give it all’ type of scream to go along with what the band managed to create. There is a really good melodic riff which defines ‘A is for Army of Slaves’, a great build-up/transition section in ‘The Charme of Dominating’ which leads to a nice little outro riff, and tracks ‘Schalterhygiene’ and ‘2te Klasse Bahnabteil’ are great, brief punches to the face. And we all love those.

Minus.Mensch is a well constructed piece of work. It’s intense, it’s emotional, it’s focused.. And it’s worth checking out. -Xplisit (sputnikmusic)

Off Camber is a relatively new band from North Western New Jersey who formed in early 2012, I believe. Off Camber play a noisey, discordant, and experimental style of music that incorporates elements of modern hardcore, punk, screamo as well as some cool 90's Ebullition style hardcore thrown in for good measure. The band features off- kilter/spastic guitar with really cool female vocals. I get influences ranging from 90's Ebullition bands such as Torches To Rome, Bread And Circuits, and Yaphett Kotto to more modern bands such as Beau Navire and Mahria. The four songs on the band's debut EP entitled Cat. 4 Upgrade make for a great listen and are over in just about five minutes. Off Camber makes for a chaotic and volatile listen. Great stuff. Gaza is an experimental metal band from Salt Lake City, Utah that incorporates elements of grindcore, mathcore, and sludge into their music. Formed in 2004, they are currently signed to Black Market Activities and have released one EP and three full-length albums. They are known for their complex and heavy sound, as well as their outspoken anti-religious and political views.

 

At some moments, Gaza are nearly as overwhelming in their rage and misanthropy as Khanate or Today Is The Day, with all instruments (voice included) howling out in mad agony at the world around them.

Of course, all artists respond to their environment, but this band is one of the lucky few that can express the abyss of human emotion through channels that an audience can respect for its eloquent musicality as much as its raw energy. Rather than relying solely on the traditional array of ‘heavy’ techniques—blastbeats, breakdowns, pinch harmonics, extreme dissonance, etc.—Gaza draw deeply from wells across the entire metal community and resourcefully come up with some tricks of their own.

Stockholm based screamo quintet Heart on My Sleeve is only a year and a half old but things are
already starting to move. The band features members from former acts such as The Hope and the
Failure and Followed by 37 Seconds of Happiness. With their emotional lyrics and melodic yet classic
screamo sound it didn’t take long before they created a buzz in the screamo community and gained atrue hardcore fan base with dedicated followers from all over the world.

The female fronted band began their journey in late 2010 and has since recorded two four song
digital EP´s and one digital split with the Russian post-hardcore project. Heart On My Sleeve is characterized by its melodic structure, epic harmonies and emotive screams.

La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland. While most people from this town spend their lives handcrafting complicated mechanisms for use in luxury watches, Coilguns have been busy crafting complex mechanisms of their own.

Coilguns is fast and like things to move forward quicker than usual. After a year of existence, 2 EP’s, a few good support slots like The Dillinger Escape Plan and a successful first headlining tour in Europe in september 2011, the band already started booking a second european run for the spring of 2012. Also meant to be released for that tour, a fancy 10’ vinyl version of “Stadia Rods” and a limited UK version CD of the same recording through Scottish DIY label Dead Dead Dead Music.

Citing bands like Converge, Dillinger Escape Plan, Cursed,Breach or Botch, Coilguns live up to their name delivering sonic projectiles at extremely high velocity.
