Narrows are a collaboration between former members of Botch, These Arms Are Snakes, Unbroken and Some Girls. They took the metalcore formula and churned in some Swans-like darkwave, art rock, British shoegaze and ambient noise on their debut album, 2009’s New Distances. But on Painted, they don’t think quite so hard; instead, Narrows use their instinctual gut-bile to craft tunes such as “”It’s The Water,”” which is just over two minutes of distorted bass, spacey guitars and a mid-song slide-guitar refrain that’s out of this world. Sure, there are longer songs on here—the eight-plus minutes of “Greenland” meander a bit too much, actually—but by that point, they’ve already hit us with “Absolute Betrayer,” a downright unsettling bit of gothy riff-core and “TB Positive,” which kind of sounds like caged animals being dropped out of a plane.

It should be said that vocalist Dave Verellen is arguably the best vocalist of the metalcore genre, but on Painted, he’s able to temper his lion-like bellow with odd yelps and the random touch of melody. (Those with normal vocal cords would not be able to pull off the harrowing opening scream-ramble of “Face Paint.”) Verellen is a beast, that’s established, but everyone here is completely amped up. The guitar work by Ryan Frederiksen (ex-These Arms Are Snakes) and Jodie Cox (ex-Bullet Union) is unrelenting and inventive. Bassist Rob Moran (ex-Some Girls/Unbroken) should put in a patent request for his crunchy, distorted bass sound. And put drummer Sam Stothers (ex-Makeout Boys) in a mentorship program with heavy hitters such as Dave Grohl and Bill Ward ASAP, because this guy has machines for arms.

One warning: Don’t listen to Painted late at night while lying in bed with the lights out. It will come at you like a demented fever dream, and you’d be better off just re-watching the unspeakable scenes in that terrifying horror movie that scarred you for life as a child. Heed our words: Painted is some seriously scary rock music. -Jason Schreurs (altpress)

Narrows - 2008 Narrows

Band : Narrows
Album : Narrows
Release Year : 2008
Genre : Hardcore | Mathcore

Tracklist :
01 Life Vests Float, Kids Don't
02 Crooked Tongues
03 The Touch Test

Narrows are comprised of a seasoned cast of musicians: Dave Verellen (Botch, Roy), Rob Moran (Unbroken, Some Girls), Ryan Fredereksen (These Arms Are Snakes), Jodie Cox (Tropics, Bullet Union) and Sam Stothers (Makeout Boys, Quarantine). With an overdriven/soaked bass, ghost land guitar work, brooding drums and a shrapnel laced voice, Narrows prove they are built for the dark lands we live in. In these three remarkable songs, Narrows transcend the tired sub-genres of hardcore/punk/metal and leave their own unforgettable musical scar, proving that they are the celebrated past, awe inspiring present, and infectious future of today's heavy music community.

Growing up doesn't mean growing soft. Though the transition into adulthood and it's cumbersome responsibilities typically goes hand in hand with complacency and the urge to settle into comfortable routines, it's necessary to remember that maturity and a placated existence are mutually exclusive behavioral patterns. Look only to the refined musical maelstrom of Narrows for confirmation.

Spread out across both the United States and two continents, Narrows exists despite geographical inconveniences for the sole purpose of creating devastating noise. Though outside obligations will most likely relegate the live Narrows experience to a truly rare event, the shared need to exorcise their collective demons fuels the trans-global project. Dave Verellen (Botch, Roy), Rob Moran (Unbroken, Some Girls, Over My Dead Body), Ryan Frederiksen (These Arms Are Snakes, Nineironspitfire), Jodie Cox (Tropics, Rohame, Bullet Union), and Sam Stothers (Makeout Boys, Quarantine) are busy men with busy lives. The Narrows project is not meant to define and drive their individual lives. Rather, the band serves as a respite; a rare opportunity to escape; a vengeful howl from the basest corner of the psyche. In those rare moments when the five men find themselves in the same city, the quintet seizes the opportunity to combine their disparate talents to craft their unique brand of aural malice.

Narrows now offer up their first proper full length album titled "New Distances". Anchored by a minimalist punk framework and elaborated by squalls of angular guitar noise, the music is simultaneously beguiling and dissonant. Helmed by Verellen's signature roar, the resulting compositions owe as much to the early hardcore pioneers as to New York and London's post-punk founders. Terminally bleak, counter-intuitive to the standard rock paradigm, and at odds with everyone, Narrow's debut is an angry slab of nihilistic abandon.

Narrows - 2009 New Distances

Band : Narrows
Album : New Distances
Release Year : 2009
Genre : Hardcore / Mathcore

Tracklist :
1. Chambered
2. Sea Witch
3. A Restoration Effect
4. I Give You Six Months
5. Changing Clothes
6. Newly Restored
7. The Fourragere
8. Gypsy Kids
9. Marquis Lights

Hardcore super group Narrows follows up their not amazing but promising self-titled 7” with New Distances. The band consists of guitarists Jodie Cox(Tropics), Ryan Frederiksen(These Arms Are Snakes/Nineironspitfire), drummer Sam Strothers (Quarantine/Makeout Boys), bassist Rob Moran(Some Girls/Unbroken), and vocalist Dave Verellen(Botch/Roy). If you’re looking for intensely heavy music with breakdowns and blast beats you won’t find it here. New Distances takes a very different and intelligent approach to hardcore.
All in all Narrows put forth a unique album that raises the bar for Post-Punk/Hardcore bands today. This side project was started as a way to get some things off of their chests and you can feel their frustration and rage throughout the album. I will say that this album is not for everyone but it will satisfy anyone wanting to hear more of Dave's voice. The only problem with the album is that the pacing may throw some people off and the last track doesn't have the power of the others. Rob Moran summed it up pretty well in an interview by saying “People should just take this for what it is...people you may or may not know playing music. It is a new band and people will either like it or not.”
