The Earth is a Man is an instrumental, math-rock band from Chicago, IL. Their music probably falls within the ephemeral boundaries of post rock, though in shorter forms than the genre’s average, but it prominently features the guitar interplay and tapping techniques of math rock and the overt technicality of progressive rock. At least one person has described this combination of genres as “soft-math.”

The band lists their Chicago-based forebears Tortoise and Maps and Atlases as primary influences, and considers bands like Mogwai , Don Caballero, Battles and Neu! stylistic touchstones. Many dads, in either office or barbecue settings, have likened their music’s frequent dual-guitar-lead passages to the work of the Allman Brothers.

Early and prolonged immersion in the continual loops of video game composers like Nobuo Uematsu, Koji Kondo and Yasunori Mitsuda couldn’t help but inform the band’s melodic sensibilities. The music and philosophies of Brian Eno cast a wide and glorious shadow over all of the band’s output (and the rest of the free world).
