Thinking Straight - 2011 Opposite of Ordinary

Band : Thinking Straight
Album : Opposite of Ordinary
Release Year : 2011
Genre : Hardcore | Straight Edge

Tracklist :
 1. song #1
2. oath that sets me free
3. friends and family
4. fall apart
5. still here
6. thank you
7. the opposite of ordinary (instrumental)
8. never understand (cover song chain of strength)

Not too many Indonesian hardcore / punk Bands who still survive and be consistent in its tracks since the mid '90s. Thinking Straight is not one that only survive, but is now getting stronger. With an album of new weapons such as The Opposite of Ordinary, they are increasingly keen to voice their mindset towards Straight Edge ideology that they profess. What is interesting is the way they play hardcore music. At the beginning of his emergence, Thinking Straight influenced by musical styles classic hardcore bands such as 88-year Youth of Today, but now the song such as "Song # 1" or "Oath That Sets Me Free" began to show influences from old school metal bands like era Metallica Kill 'em All, but combined in such a way that gave birth to something unique and keep it fast, brutal and frightening. In the division of writing lyrics, Thinking Straight is still discussing the themes in the immediate neighborhood of the spectrum, polemics in skena, commitment to the lifestyle they choose, family and friends, as well as gratitude've discovered bands like Youth of Today in the past. How to execute the song feels exactly like what was said Keith Morris (Black Flag / Circle Jerks) in the documentary American Hardcore, "Cut the half-finished bridge, do not use the intro, no outro use, straight out," in the sense that all the songs average average duration is short but well targeted and efficiently. All these advantages make The Opposite of Ordinary become one of Indonesia's best hardcore punk release earlier this year. -RS

02.Devided
03.Positive Crew
04.We Wont Stop
05.Independent Individual
06.Go Home, Wash Your Feet And Sleep
07.Step Forward (STEP FORWARD Cover)

One of my favorite local band. This is their debut album and it's almost ten years ago.
THINKING STRAIGHT is an aggressive hardcore band from Depok City Crew Straight to the point in-your-face-hardcore, this straight edge band has no need an useless introduction, with full of melodic and harmonious guitars blend with hars and sharp vocal, these five guys always serve an agressive mosh atmosphere without give you a chance to take a deep breath while you guys see them on the stage. At the same time they dare to combine 88'youth crew style and heavy metal parts so you guys will be suprised with some unpredictable shocking parts on their music. Able to add up full of sing along positive anthem on their lyrics, this band makes the straight edge still an important part of hardcore scene. With "positive crew" their first debut album relased by Channel X records-indonesia and re-released by Diehard Collective records-hungary in 2001. Now they are already start to enter the recording studio to produce their second release. Overall, Thinking Straight makes hardcore more credible and vital !

The classic album for today is goes to Warzone.
Warzone was a hardcore punk band from New York City. Anti-racist skinhead frontman Raymond “Raybeez” Barbieri was the group’s only consistent member between its formation on the Lower East Side of Manhattan in 1982 until Barbieri’s untimely death due to pneumonia on September 11, 1997. A U.S. Navy veteran, he was receiving treatment that many fans and friends have claimed was shamefully inadequate in a Veterans Health Administration facility when the illness damaged his liver and took his life at the age of 35.

Raybeez’s small but loyal following accompanied the former Agnostic Front drummer from the nascent days before the “Youth Crew” era in hardcore punk, on and off of three record labels, before finally turning out en masse for two sold-out benefit shows following his passing

WARZONE's The Victory Years is a tribute to the years that veteran New York City hardcore-punk act spent with Victory Records. Tragically lead vocalist Ray ‘Raybeez” Barbieri passed away in September of 1997. This 17 track CD will be the last release documenting the legacy of this important musical act. WARZONE was more then a band- but a movement within itself.

Shelter - 1997 Beyond Planet Earth

Band : Shelter
Album : Beyond Planet Earth
Release Year : 1997
Genre : Krishnacore / Straight Edge / Hardcore / Punk

Tracklist :
01. Revealed In Reflection
02. I Know So Little
03. Rejuvenate
04. Hated To Love
05. Refusal
06. Whole Wide World
07. Helpless
08. Beyond Planet Earth
09. Time's Ticking Away
10. Man Or Beast
11. In Praise Of Others
12. Eleventh Day Of The Moon
13. Untitled

Well, this time for the classic album.
Shelter is a Hare Krishna Hardcore Punk Band from New York City.
Formed by Ray Cappo of Youth of Today and originally comprising members of 76% Uncertain and Tom Capone from Beyond / Bold.

If you have never listened to Shelter than you have never experienced the passion that this band plays with. Shelter has been spreading their message for a good part of the last ten years. Released in 1997, this was Shelter’s follow up to the album “Mantra”. My expectations were pretty high considering how much of a groundbreaking record “Mantra” was. I guess that is why I initially was unimpressed with this record. However after I listened to the record about 5 times, I began to see that although “Beyond this Planet Earth” does not match “Mantra” it is a solid record. Many of the songs contain the same elements that make Shelter great. “Revealed in Reflection” starts off the record and it is a song that typifies Shelters true sound. The band starts off with a soft-sounding beginning and eventually crescendos into a crash and burn ending.

If you like Shelter song’s that are of the political nature, you would like tracks “Man or Beast” and “Helpless”. These are the songs that have social and political overtones that Shelter, I would assume, writes with the hope of making the listener think about the type of lifestyle they are living. Don’t worry though, you will not be brainwashed. Shelter preaches a vegetarian lifestyle, but I am sure that the band has influenced many others to change. Shelter also delivers a couple of spiritual tunes that preach about the type of Buddhism that the band practices. “Beyond Planet Earth” and “ The eleventh day on the moon” all talk about the religious beliefs of the band. The cover of the CD also looks like a Buddhist type of drawing.

Although “Beyond this Planet Earth” does not come close to matching up with “Mantra” and it is only 13 songs (plus one bonus remix), it still captures the sound that Shelter has made their own. If you are a shelter fan, buy this record. If you never heard of Shelter and want to hear them, buy “Mantra” instead of this album.

Morning Again - 1998 As Tradition Dies Slowly

Band : Morning Again
Album : As Tradition Dies Slowly
Release Year : 1998
Genre : Hardcore / Metalcore / Straight Edge

Tracklist :
1 Stones
2 Seasons
3 Murder You Call War
4 As Tradition Dies Slowly
5 Uncivil Hands
6 Dictation of Beauty
7 Free to Decide
8 Martyr
9 Words of a Chosen Few
10 Rights Of Passage

This is has a layered, heavy sound to it, with raspy hoarse vocals that are interesting and set this apart. The songs are constantly evolving and aren't content to keep repeating the same riffs. It's all very thick and metal influenced, and again, heavy!
If Slayer were to begin writing hardcore songs, their next album would probably sound a lot like "As Tradition Dies Slowly." Morning Again plan to take metal hardcore to a whole new level.

Inside Out - 1990 No Spiritual Surrender

Band : Inside Out
Album : No Spiritual Surrender
Release Year : 1990
Genre : Hardcore / Punk / Straight Edge

Tracklist :
1.Burning Fight
2.Undertone
3.By A Thread
4.No Spiritual Surrender
5.Sacrifice
6.Redemption

Zack de la Rocha began Inside Out in August of 1988, when he decided he wanted to sing in a band (rather than play Guitar, as he had been doing in Hardstance). Teaming up with Rob Hayworth (also of Hardstance) on Guitar, Sterling Wilson (of No For An Answer) on Bass, and Vadim (of Half Off) on Drums, Zack wrote several songs and played one or two shows. The response, however, was not enthusiastic, and Zack put the band on hold.
In mid 1989 Vic DiCara moved to SoCal. Chris Bratton, acting on a tip from Tom Capone of Beyond, contacted Vic to play in a band he had put together for Dave Smalley (best known as the singer of DYS, Dag Nasty, All, and Down By Law). Dave actually came down and sang with the band, but soon felt he wanted to distance himself from Dag Nasty at that time (he then formed Down By Law). But a member of that band, Alex Baretto (Best known as bassist for Chain of Strength and who had also been playing drums with Zack in Hardstance) got the inspiration to reanimate Inside Out - fusing Zack and Sterling from the original line up, with himself on drums and Vic on guitar.

The resulting pool of emotional and spiritual energy, chemistry, and artistry was amazing. Together they belted out great new songs, the first of which was "No Spiritual Surrender" - which Vic had written the basic music and lyrics to. Playing their first show in a Riverside restaurant called "Spanky's Cafe" the response from the Hardcore scene was immense, and a huge wave of excitement spread throughout the American and International Hardcore scenes.
Some personal issues led Sterling to leave the band. He was replaced with Mark Hayworth (Rob's brother, best known as a bassist for Gorilla Biscuits and Hardstance), while some similar issues with Alex Baretto led to him being replaced by Chris Bratton (best known as the drummer for Wool and Chain of Strength). Though the leaving members were truly missed, these line up changes did not slow the band down a bit, and the new chemistry of the members upped the ampage.

Early in 1990, Inside Out recorded 6 songs, which were quickly picked up by Revelation Records, which they released about a year later as the "No Spiritual Surrender" EP.Having played the west coast extensively, Inside Out now embarked on a US Tour with Shelter and Quicksand. The shows were awesome, but something else was brewing. Vic's interests in spirituality - rooted in the later days of Beyond, and fueled by his ardent love for the music and messages of the Bad Brains, the Cro-Mags, and Reggae music - though in large part a source of Inside Out's intensity, ironically threatened to end the chemistry of Inside Out before it could really blossom.
On the heavily Krishna saturated tour, Shelter's singer and the Hare Krishna ambassador to Hardcore, Ray Cappo (singer of Youth of Today and Shelter), assured Vic that he should quit Inside Out to become a full-on Hare Krishna initiate... and join Ray's own band, Shelter.

At the end of June, 1990, Just before their show, Ray & Vic entered a backstage room at the "Vic Theatre" in Chicago, where Vic told Zack and Mark that he had decided he would leave the band at the end of the tour to become a Hindu Monk (and, of course, to play Guitar in Shelter).Dismayed, Zack and Mark attempted to continue the band, and were able to write a few more great songs, but the particular chemistry that was Inside Out was no more. Zack dissolved the band around August of 1990, and took his ideas and inspirations forward to form the band he is now best known for: Rage Against The Machine.

The Rival Mob - 2010 Hardcore For Hardcore EP

Band : The Rival Mob
Album : Hardcore For Hardcore EP
Release Year : 2010
Genre : Hardcore / Straight Edge

Tracklist :
1. Hardcore for Hardcore
2. Mind Over Matter
3. Face to Face with Your Executioner
4. Tough Love
5. Minefield
6. Land of the Free

There’s a reasonable chance you might be more familiar with this band for their wildly popular T-shirts which fetch around three to nine times their original price on eBay than their albums. Despite how awesome their merch may or may not be, Six Feet Under Records ensured their place in contemporary hardcore with the Hardcore for Hardcore EP. A six track call to arms loaded with snotty vocals, thumping breaks, and racing percussion, this is the next record to file under “mandatory listening.”
Take a pick from your chosen favorite hardcore nuances. Booming gang vocals? Nearly every song’s got it. Need an especially crushing breakdown? Check out “Tough Love.” Looking for something with a nice, slower groove? “Minefield” absolutely kills it. The Rival Mob spins the wheel of particularly delicious riffs and rhythms and effectively hits the target on each of the six songs. Unlike some other bands who’ve ridden the message board, shit talking hype train over the past five years or so, The Rival Mob delivers the goods time and time again. They’re even better live than on wax, which is another relief to hear. The first press of Hardcore for Hardcore is already sold out, but another one is currently in the works from Six Feet Under Records. -smutlife

108 - 2010 18.61

Band : 108
Album : 18.61
Release Year : 2010
Genre : Hardcore / Krishnacore / Straight Edge

Tracklist :
  1. "God Talk" – 1:04
  2. "Crescent Moon" – 1:28
  3. "18.61" – 2:22
  4. "Reduced" – 2:20
  5. "Relentless Masters" – 2:20
  6. "Fallen Angel" – 1:47
  7. "Mannequins" – 2:00
  8. "Ashes/Dust" – 2:11
  9. "Forever is Destroyed" – 2:49
  10. "Early Funeral" – 5:10
18.61 is the final album released by 108 with lead singer Robert Fish. In March 2010, before the official release of 18.61, Fish announced his departure citing that he was "struggling to find my place within 108 due to the personal evolution I have gone through." After the departure of Fish, the remaining members of 108 discussed the possibilities of ending the band and breaking up. However, in April 2010, the band announced that 108 would continue without Robert Fish. While the band has no intention of replacing their former lead singer, 108 will still tour in support of 18.61 and continue writing new music. Commenting on the departure of Fish, guitarist Vic DiCara stated, "Robert's contribution to the band was so vast and touched so many aspects of 108, that we fully realize [we] can not 'replace' him. We don't plan to try. Instead, we will do something very different from what we did as a band with him."
The theme of 18.61 continues with 108's strong interest in Hare Krishna. The title of the album references the 61st couplet of the 18th chapter of the sacred Hindu scripture, the Bhagavad Gita. The passage translates in English to "The controller of all lies at the heart of the machine, and connects its wires to the living being who is under its spell."
