Frantically destroying time signatures and dynamics like a holocaust of pop music, City of Ifa's (pronounced E-fuh. That's a long e sound) brand spankin' new release, Black Pyramid would makes The Fall of Troy look like child's play and very well may scare The Dillinger Escape Plan. There is no room for slowing down over the course of 50 minutes, and expect to not keep up very well.
Through the beautiful mess that is most of the songs, there comes calmer, more accessible sections and cleaner vocals to hold onto for a hot second before being submerged back into the hoopla of frenzied guitars and shouting. The extended song lengths give time for multiple dynamics presented in each song. "Making Means" hits on heavy and technical, slow and groovy, a well placed crescendo, chunky palm mutes, and a couple blast beats within 7 minutes. The implementation of both clean and harsh vocal layers simultaneously push for continual dynamic attention. It's clever, complex writing done right.
