Despite forming in late 2010, Aberdeen’s Cavalcades took very little time in releasing their first E.P., Nothing Worse Than Empty. Seemingly inspired by bands such as Defeater and Touche Amore with their heart filled, emotional sound, this E.P. certainly isn’t bad for a first shot.

Downbeat riffs and thrashing drums cultivate a strong melancholic vibe that lasts throughout the E.P. and a lot of really nice guitar work goes on, with some fantastic melodic phrases laid on top of heavier chord progressions. However, the vocals aren’t up to the same standard as the music. They are a bit too monotonous and although sounding suitably desperate and hearty, could be more interesting in most parts with more variation to add emphasis to different sections of the songs. The mix doesn’t do the vocals any favours either, as they feel a bit lost due to production which feels a bit muddy.

This four track E.P. is no doubt strong. It has a great sound, with a very clear direction and is a strong start for such a new band. With some more interesting and elaborate vocals and better production on their next release, this band will go far.
