Formed in the early part of the Pliocene age by complex molecules, BATS (featuring ex-members of Martha Washington) have spent millions of years developing their sound from a series of intermittent bleeps to the sexy sonic bullets they create today. 4 out of 5 BATS hail from Ireland's alpha-smoke- Dublin, while the other crawled his way on bloody knuckles out of the haunted town of Carbury, Kildare in the mid 1600's.
Cruel Sea Scientist is just a smidge unsatisfying, if only because it begs to last longer. Question marks remain over the group’s originality: both instruments and vocals sound a little too imitative of their influences at some points, whether it’s the Blood Brothers-like call-and-response routine and funky hardcore riffs, the Todd Smith-like spoken passages, but these inconsistencies will surely be ironed out over time and Cruel Sea Scientist will be remembered as a rough but eminently replayable slice of premium musicosity.

The band sat somewhere between screamo, post hardcore and post rock and were influenced by the likes of Daitro, Envy, Red Sparowes, From Monument to Masses.

So in the midst of writing a new album, the dudes from Archives decide to disband, but luckily also decide to release the written material. And to be completely honest, after listening to this release it makes me want to cry like a girl and piss my pants out of sorrow for the loss of such a great band. This stuff is brilliant and deserves to be listened. Enjoy!

Five Minute Ride was a post-hardcore band from Sacramento, California. The band features Kurt Travis, next vocalist of Dance Gavin Dance.
This is an extremely solid EP. Be aware, this isn't the Kurt Travis you heard on Dance Gavin Dance's latest effort. His vocals are constantly alternating form singing to screaming in the blink of an eye. The guitars are very fast-paced and interesting, albeit a bit repetitive at times. The EP starts with a minute or so long instrumental track, and then leads into "The Rapture Was Yesterday," where Travis displays his vocal ability right off the bat. The harsh screaming is a trend throughout the EP, and you never know when Travis could go from soaring vocals into a piercing, high pitched scream-a-thon. One thing that interests me a lot with this release, is the bassist's ability. He, unlike most post-hardcore acts, does not simply go along with whatever the hell the guitarists are doing. He sort of does his own thing, giving the songs much more depth than you would normally see from a post-hardcore band. His skills as a bassist are evident in "I Knew A Girl Named Love York," which is really his showcase. Nothing that Five Minute Ride does is what you would normally expect from a post-hardcore band. They aren't extremely generic, they aren't easily accessible to 13 year old girls wearing black eye makeup, and they don't use the common formulas. With The World Needs Convincing Of All That It's Missing, the guys of Five Minute Ride really showed they had the chops to be a great post-hardcore band.

However, getting past the fact that this album is stitched together from other post-hardcore albums, the actual songs and musicianship are pretty impressive. The songwriting is tight. While there are goofy, incongruous moments like the aforementioned Bear vs. Shark break, in general, La Cosa Nostra has a knack for constructing fun, well-paced songs. Their energy is really likable. The best moments on any given song are typically when all of the musicians are going balls out because La Cosa Nostra is a band that excels when they feel the most fun or youthful rather than cerebral or wise. For example, "Shut Yo Mutt" doesn't really break until 1:11 and up until there is as exciting and awesome as any post-hardcore song to have been released in the past few years. If looking at the punk vs. prog dynamic on this album, they're typically their most fun when the drumming resembles punk more than prog, no matter what the guitarist, bass, and vocals are doing. A final nitpicking note about the songwriting is that La Cosa Nostra excels when they use major keys instead of minor keys. The awesomeness of "Shut Yo Mutt" is hindered by the cheesiness of the harmonic minor opening, and just makes the intro sound more like The Fall of Troy and less like a unique, original idea.

Another great part of La Cosa Nostra is their technical prowess. It's hard not to think of Thomas Erak of The Fall of Troy when looking at the guitar. The guitarist alternates between savagely fast pull-off and hammer riffs and quickly strummed, high-pitched chords. While this aesthetic may seem a direct ripoff of Erak's style, it is performed with equal if not better flare and speed, and engages in a wider variety of styles. The chill interplay between guitar and the other instruments on "Foreshadowing" would never be found on a Fall of Troy album. The Million Dead post-punk riffing and octaves at the end of "Open Doors" would be lost in the wankery of Doppelganger. Moving on to the drumming, as I mentioned earlier, punker equals better. There are lot of interesting drum breaks and intense accents (think "Replacement of Wolverine Skulls," which is technically the most impressive song on the album), but the drums feel most at home when they're smashing out an awesome double time feel for all the other instruments to shred over. I mean, I don't want to relegate the drums to some kind of second tier position because the guy is obviously pretty awesome at his instrument, but the drumming can really carry some of the weaker songs when it pursues their coolest, fastest moments. Maybe a crazier alternation of the two style could yield a perfect union of both worlds. Finally, the bass surprised me. For bands with insane, upstaging guitarists (Tera Melos, The Fall of Troy, etc.), it's easy for the bass to get lost in the mix. With La Cosa Nostra that is not a problem. The bass shreds it up with the other instruments and doesn't even feel cheesy like fast basswork sometimes can. My favorite moments on the bass though are on the more open track "Foreshadowing," where the bassist throws in some perfect Saetia-like harmonizations and fills. Overall, the instruments are awesome.

So what do we take away from this album? If you're willing to accept that La Cosa Nostra is just another grandchild of At the Drive-In and are pretty transparent with their influences, you've got yourself a fun, impressive collection of post-hardcore song. Considering these songs are all demoes for an EP, I can imagine a full-length with better production and more time for La Cosa Nostra to develop their own voice as a band will yield a pretty awesome LP. However, right now, La Cosa Nostra is youthful, fun if a little blunt with their machine-gun riffing and relentless tempo.

Encrypt Manuscript has been concocting some of the more unique and divisive sounds in the metro area the last few years. Though it starts with a base of frantic post-hardcore / indie rock, the band restrain it with an attentive detail to jazz breaks and more subtle underlying instrumentation, topped off with alternations between a high-pitched vocal yelp, a beat poetry-inflected delivery and the occasional frailly sung section. Their long-awaited debut full-length, Census, is the culmination of these talents.

There's been some persistent comparisons since the band's Dialogues EP: the Nation of Ulysses (for the contrast of an unsettling swagger and clear jazz influences; some vague political theory musings and similar aesthetic); the related Make Up (for the unique, semi-theatrical and soulful display; aesthetic, too); and the Blood Brothers (since Brian Davis' jarring vocals mildly resemble Jordan Blilie and Johnny Whitney combined into an all-in-one approach). But Census largely alleviates those similarities. Encrypt is also way cleaner-sounding than the NOU, but you might chalk that up to advancements in recording technology the last 16 years. In fact, people will probably now draw musical (more so than vocal) parallels between them and Minus the Bear's more spacious moments; frankly, it wouldn't be totally off. Nonetheless, Census brings out Encrypt's individual characteristics considerably better than before.

The wordplay Davis employs is likely to remind some of the At the Drive-In circa Relationship of Command ("Empires are flea bites beneath dirty sheets / Insect intentions intent shunned in sects"), but he seems to splash his clever narratives with a more personal touch. It becomes raw and uncomfortable when he repeatedly snarls "I was only eight years old / holding a dead dog / on the front yard and no one's home" in "Two Mice," whether the scene is reconstructed from memory or drummed out of mere creativity.

One standout comes in the form of "Pink Slip," where quietly dancing guitars weave under Davis' soaring, catty calls, its various chorus succeeding with the yap of "I'm in the confines of it! Oh, oh, I'm in the confines and it's," the sentence completed by Davis' bandmates with a smoother, sung conclusion of "easierrr...so easierrr." Davis gets rather sassy in "The Royal We," while a healthy roll propels the song along well, fueled by pace-making tambourine shakes and circling, prickly guitar lines.Census, tracked with Alex Newport in October/November 2007, actually followed a scrapped recording with

Paul Mahajan that past January of what was to be titled People. But considering Newport's edge in regards to producing more "punk" bands, he makes much more sense as the producer here. Sure, Encrypt is weird and frantic, but there's a certain bite and aggression that Mahajan might only be familiar with in his work from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Newport captures it nicely -- the band sound clear as crystal glass and tight as hell, but no less antagonistic to the listener.

Word on the street is Encrypt will be calling it quits soon. They've subtly improvised and improved over their years as a band, all the while with a truly independent ethic -- like their other releases, the pristinely packaged Census was released on The Tone Library, a label seemingly run by members of the band. If the breakup rumors are true, it's obviously disappointing, but it will mean that the band's swan song was their best song.

Hairmoans embodies teen angst and masturbation. It's like catching a really crucial wave on your boogie board and then seeing your parents having sex on the shore.

Vacanza, an italian band who recently released a debut ep 7" via La Fine & FalloDischi, both labels from the same country. The 7" contains just 4 tracks, i wish it has more songs on it but sadly the reality is other, their music goes pulls a variety of genres, post-hardcore/punk/screamo and also they drop some post-punk too, maybe that's why their songs are pretty catchy... looking forward for future recordings. For fans of Fine Before You Came, Distanti,  Gerda and those kind of bands who have lovely italian vocals. Recommended. -musicasheroin

"Fair Trades..." see's a bit of a departure from Hot Cross' previous sound. Seemingly doing away with the dissonant guitars and harsher of the vocal dynamics in favour of a much more straight forward, melodic approach, a step that they already seemed to be taking on their previous full length "Cryonics". However, don't get me wrong, they still retain an 'emo' sound and still employ the multiple volcalist approach; this is definately still Hot Cross.

In conclusion, although this is slightly different from the Hot Cross on "Cryonics" it is still very good and worth the listen. The added melodic edge shows that the band is not afraid to experiment and progress with thier sound and this can be nothing but a good thing. I would reccomend this EP to anyone who is already a fan of Hot Cross or any of the members past bands, or simply anyone who is into well-written, intelligent music. Also the added melody seems to lend Hot Cross some cross-over appeal and this may even be enjoyed by fans of bands like Thursday, as it is a lot more restrained than alot of modern screamo.
