Expectations is a five piece band from Bulgaria, one month ago this debut album was released supported by a great production and some touring in East-Europe. Their music can be conceived as an atmospheric/melodic hardcore/crust, where long instumental parts swing between calm and aggressive riffs until exploding into heavier parts, supported by grinding vocals and fast drums. The whole record is a perfect realization of a personal form of hardcore, and another proof of the valid scene that is growing in eastern Europe. -Luke (welastlonger)

Dead Blue Sky released only one CD and then disappeared into the mist of obscure bands. A simplistic description of the music would be melodic death metal with black metal overtones and a touch of classic emo- no, not the emo that exists today, but the more seminal sound that came about in the early to mid-1990’s with bands like Mineral and Sunny Day Real Estate. There isn’t much of that influence here, not enough to peg DBS as an emo band or even anything close, but anyone familiar with that era of music will hear bits and pieces of it sprinkled throughout the CD, most notably in how the songs build and release. The music also recalls the sound of [i]Beyond Hypothermia[/i]-era Cave In with tumbling guitar harmonies and raw, under-produced grittiness.

The album begins with soft vocals over an acoustic guitar before lurching into the tragic-sounding opening song, [i]Beneath The Autumn Sun[/i]. Imagine your world falling apart, just crumbling in your hands as you watch helplessly. This song evokes that feeling as the guitars shred over a slow, droning drum beat. Juxtaposition seems to be a common musical theme on this album, and it’s present in almost every song. The third track, [i]To Live In Dreams[/i], showcases their ability to build a song to an incredible, thundering climax, and then, like a star after a supernova, what remains is just the hint of the song in the form of several overlaid acoustic guitars with a stark, atmospheric keyboard carrying the melody.

The vocals alternate between black metal growling and feminine-sounding male falsetto clean vocals. While it may sound unappealing on paper, it actually works quite well, as the falsettos are very soft. The clean vocals only appear about 15% of the time, and the throaty, Carcass-like growl stomps through the flowing, free-falling melodies for most of the album. The drums, while not perfectly performed, are played with a passion I’ve not heard on many recordings, especially post-2000. There are no triggers and no studio wizardry. It’s one man and his drums bashing with the raw emotion that the music taps into. At the end of the song [i]Holding Yesterday For Ransom[/i], the music drops into an acoustic interlude, but drummer Matt Thomas builds into it with a double bass run that shoots through the soft lullaby, triggering rough vocals over what should be a placid end to the song. It wouldn’t work with an overproduced sound, but with the vibe this album has, it’s believable and does not come off as contrived.

This recording, thematically, is so much an embodyment of what could have been. The concepts of sadness and regret, a longing for the past, or a present that was hoped for but never realized, could be communicated here without vocals. The music alone is sufficient enough to communicate that. It’s bleak, barren, and seemingly only alive in the imagination of the listener. Truly, the band’s sound is perfectly described by the name of the band. It’s well-executed and well written, and is one of the few releases where the flaws actually add to the overall atmosphere of the album.

I have few complaints about this release. I still enjoy listening to it years after it was released. At times I wish the drums would have been a little tighter. The bass is pretty much not there, which isn’t surprising given the black/melodeath sound DBS aims for. Still, it would have been nice to hear some low end. Also, the one thing that’s bothersome is that there is always a lead or melody going on with the guitars, and there are few straight out rhythm breaks. It makes the songs run together and it’s really easy to hear one song, leave the room, come back 10 minutes later and you won’t know that it’s a new track. That isn’t helped by the way they avoid typical song structures and seldom repeat riffs or verses. Depending on your taste that’s either good or bad. I am a fan of it when bands can pull it off, and DBS definitely does. If you like bands like (old) Cave In, Agalloch, Prayer For Cleansing, Converge, or Zao (Blood and Fire-era), this might be worth a listen or two if you can track it down.

The whole idea of Have It All was born on a cold and rainy night in 2010 when three friends spent their time together, wasting their minds in a rundown bar in Berlin Friedrichshain.

... After playing in different bands and sharing the road on a short tour in 2008, Marco (Drain The Dragon, Italy) and Jan (Worst Case, Germany) decided to keep good times coming...

With Simone sitting and Stefano smoking next to them, they just realized, "We could have a working lineup here!" The idea was simple. “Just play the music we love and share good times together”. After spending some days with Jan in Berlin, Marco, Simone and Stefano went back to Italy, starting to work on some song ideas immediately. Two months later Mattia joined the band and the final set up of HAVE IT ALL was set like pee in the cold snow. Bunga Bunga style. In October 2011 they recorded their first demo which was released in January 2012.

H2O has been a mainstay in hardcore and punk since their inception back in 1995 and have had many influences along the way. The band is thrilled to pay homage to those influential artists by covering their songs on the forthcoming album, Don’t Forget Your Roots, which will be available from Bridge Nine Records along with three special, region-specific 7” records released to complement the full-length. These three cover songs from H2O were picked to represent DC: “Safe” by DAG NASTY, “Said Gun” by EMBRACE, and “Understand” by GOVERNMENT ISSUE.

Tossing up punk rock's ubiquitous "go!" comes as second nature to NYHC band H2O as rehashing the notion of a “positive mental attitude." Look again, and the two-letter word symbolizes that Toby Morse and his bandmates are quite the death defying bunch. Not in that Cyclops laser beam shootout kind of way, but in that way where an aging band continues to release albums with a seemingly worn yet medallion worthy motto: "still here, still here, after all these fucking years." Since 1995, that H2O optimism has blitzed vanity tainted scenes leaving no shirt un-clutched. Despite one's survival luck, however, covering 14 songs can be self-flagellating--- like Punk Goes Pop volumes or nondescript bands trespassing into the best-left-alone territories of Adele. But to add another positive side to H2O's resume, they've shared stages with 80% of the selected bands. Thus Don't Forget Your Roots, in its limited lyrical tweaks and stunts, is nothing more than their pulpit of fidelity to the genre without the blindfolds.

Slight dichotomies, understandably, are the album's defining feature: a tame organ ballad vs H2O's upbeat rocker on Ramones' "I Wanna Live"; the bat-shit berserk H.R. swapped out for subdued Toby Morse vocals on Bad Brains' "Attitude"; the grand brass backdrop on Mighty Mighty Bosstones' "Someday I Suppose" anti-climatically swapped out for Todd Morse's guitar leads; melody entwined bootstraps rock vs Rusty Pistachio triplet guitar chugs and heavy duty gang vocals on Social Distortion's "Sick Boy". Two of the best covers on the record are a near resurrection of H2O's Go--- Embrace's "Said Gun" and Dag Nasty's "Safe"--- making room for the band's trademark bouncy harmonies. The H2O aesthetic remains unscathed, in its recognizable style of grit above glitz, and clamor minus the glamor.

Morse's limited range only goes so far, and age once again proves to be a toll taker. Even so, his familiar "school one knucklehead at a time" tone is bullet spitfire. Guitarists Todd Morse and Pistachio are a missing links squad who attempt to fill in diverse parts from the originals through sustained leads or fractionally-modified riffs, while the drummer and bassist go into tag team mode for a poppy output. No song is pristinely whitewashed for a hot tub full of Benjamins, nor do any walk on eggshells to satisfy the listener's nostalgic urges. As far as the "still here" quintet is concerned, unfiltered and straight-forward are their first and middle names. The reason Morse doesn't go full blown HR ballistic, for example, is to defiantly puppeteer the H2O aesthetic. Don't Forget Your Roots grabs the band's unshakable 16-year attitude to shape itself into a brick-wall tribute, leaving the stigma of covers for actors and impersonators.

So even when H2O don't push limits, they're carrying a mirror at all times. All the finger pointing and banter and blare on the album are the vines and roots from the originals, although some walk a fine line between skippy and skippable where true umph is due. But as a whole, it's quite the switchblade that edges more nicks in the punk rock family tree than any steady hand could. -Dre Okorley

A long forgotten local band, i remember how much i love this album, rewind it again and again on my tape. After almost 10 years since then, i still remember every lyrics on it. I got an email by this band yesterday and they give me their EP. Dead End Alaska is from Southern California and they playing a kind of hardcore sound. This EP is containing 3 songs from them and 1 cover song from Von Bondies. What i really love about them is like i can hear Touche Amore and La Dispute style in their music, especially on "American Made Bastard Boys", this song is pretty good though it less than 2 minutes. Decas celebrates the 10-year anniversary of metalcore stalwarts As I Lay Dying. The EP contains three new songs, four covers, four remixes, and a re-recorded medley track. The new songs sound similar to those on the the band’s last full length release, The Powerless Rise: “Paralyzed” is filled with melodic guitar hooks, pummeling verses, and a soaring chorus. The one standout is “From Shapeless to Breakable,” which is a much less melodic, heavier, and quicker track, featuring blast beats and frenzied shredding. Of the covers, the band’s rendition of “War Ensemble” by always anti-religious speed-metal legends Slayer is particularly good (although slightly ironic coming from this vocally Christian band), as they reinvigorate the thrash standard with a new level of heaviness. The remixes, meanwhile, aren’t exactly noteworthy. The “Confined” remix, in particular, seems almost like a mockery of the band’s classic song, slowing its tempo and adding cheesy synths. Nevertheless, As I Lay Dying fans will enjoy the EP’s new material and covers. Happy 10th anniversary, guys. -DAVID McKENNA

"7 Deadly Sins started with a band that used to be known called TOBASCO in the middle of early 1999 with 4 personel member as : Karel ( Drum ), Terry ( Rhytem ), Pandi ( Bass), David ( vox ) .And as generally as any other band does ,this band started out as a stand underground band where we can get involve and get along with any other underground bands by getting our self into an Audition to join by playing our favourite Punk Rock Band as : Goldfinger, Rancid, Operation ivy, Suicide Machine, NOFX, Mighty Mighty Bosstones, and lots more. TOBASCO are kept hangin on underground scene much less a year until they have decided to took a break, coz for some reason one of the member ( david ) needed to carry on with Studies abroad. As David comes back along from the hell of his screwed studies, an idea popped out to get back their feet on the ground and to reformat TOBASCO, the idea was originally came from Terry, with purposes of getting back together and play some music that we love to. The idea was anticipated well among the boys and we finally decide to get a brand new name of our new format band , that’s where we got 7 deadly Sins name from, with new formation, 7 Deadly Sins begun on early year 2001 with a new Bass player called Ais. The name of 7 Deadly Sins was actually given by David which means “ 7 Types of drunken person”. By starting our first stomp in underground scenery, one of the member came up with an idea to produce our own songs by a reason that we have pretty much tired playing peoples songs. We have started far before the band was formed, song has been produced by 7 Deadly Sins themself. As time goes by, song has been compiled, we decided to get our ass out to the recording studio, as everything being done, we carry on with an idea to produced our own fuckin album which our own fuckin dream since we started on the band. Recording Activities were started by a very low budget, long fuckin patience, and we’re so hoping that this album would be our bitter & sweet memory during our days with the underground scenery. 4 months has gone, the album were finished eventually, total track on the album were 13 tracks. By now, everyone knows Me First and the Gimme Gimmes as the all-star-punk-rock supergroup-cover-band that exploded on the scene in the 90’s, and made every other shitty pop punk band’s ironic covers obsolete with their debut Have a Ball. They’ve since tackled almost every genre under the sun, with albums of showtunes, R&B jams, classics from the 50’ and 60’s, pop hits, cheesy mom-favorites, country songs and most recently a slew of songs by Australians for their 2011 EP entitled Go Down Under. Well, never ones to rest on their laurels, the boys from the Gimmes are back with their most ambitious project to date, one that takes them far from the dingy back rooms of suburban roadhouse karaoke bars, halfway around the world to the clean, brightly lit karaoke bars of Tokyo. That’s right folks, Spike, Mike, Joey, Chris and Dave are back and this time shit’s gotten positively Japanese with the latest EP Me First and The Gimme Gimmes Sing In Japanese! And not since American Ninja has Japanese culture been so thoroughly beaten at its own game.

And they’re not stopping with Japan. The Gimmes are planning on doing ep’s in Spanish, Italian, German and French in the near future, thereby answering the eternal question “is every single culture on earth better if a bunch of drunk bay area weirdos add their own twist to it?” with a resounding ‘YEAH! No, I'm not going to give away any of the surprises!* But, on their most cryptic release, NOFX demonstrates that really, maybe they should get more credit as innovators than they have in the past. Designed as either a tool to measure the listener's punk points, or to introduce younger fans to the old guard, NOFX's untitled 2011 EP features the band covering two handfuls of obscure '80s hardcore bands. But the kicker is that the record has no track listing, no credits, and no way of identifying the source of the tunes, leaving the listener to guess and research the source for these '80s thrashers.

As the band tears through minute-long banger after minute-long banger, they exhibit the early energy and vitriol found on the seven-inches with photocopied covers from yesteryear. Remarkably, the band doesn't seem to try to mimic the old-school energy as much as draw from the same source. A lot of modern hardcore, or even throwback hardcore that tries to play in the same form as hardcore's nascent stage seems to not quite have the same snap of the originators. Usually this is due to modern production, which in cleaning off the grime cleans out the soul of the music too; or, the newer bands try to be too hardcore, and end up sounding more metal than energetic.

Somehow, NOFX records in a lo-fi manner and creates an EP that sounds like it really was recorded in 1983, and despite their collective 160 years of age, sound like they are a bunch of 17-year-olds trying their hardest to blow the speaker. In doing so, they balance just the right amount of energy, anger, and fun-times attitude to keep any of those aspects from drowning the other out.

In possibly some sort of meta-commentary, the band has released three versions of the record: a 7", a single-sided 10", and a picture disc 12". Just as the rare pressing of the original hardcore bands have become fetishized into collectibles fetching $400 on eBay, NOFX has fashioned these brand new recordings into collectibles upon their very debut.

But the release seems to operate as more than just a "check out these old tunes we used to like!" Maybe because NOFX surged in popularity in the 1990s, people tend to forget that they played their first show in 1983. Really, NOFX aren't paying tribute to their forefathers as much as they are returning to their roots. NOFX might have been one of the '90s biggest pop-punk bands, but they're also one of the last of hardcore's original front line.

Even more, the ease with which NOFX plays these covers is fascinating. Although NOFX is known for its absolutist take on politics and tales of chemical debauchery, this release underscores the band's willingness to take chances. When more serious bands do unusual things, fans and critics will often comment on how "so and so is pushing the envelope and stretching hardcore to its limits." But when NOFX records 17-minute-long songs, acoustic songs about one's mother dying, or an entire EP recorded in four hours, people go "well, of course they did, it's NOFX."

How weird is it that in using other people's ancient material, NOFX is able to show that despite all their crude humor and simplified politics, they're able to make the argument that really, they've been one of the few punk groups that isn't scared to push forward and ignore the rules that were erected around them.

Now consisting of four solid members, including founding members Laura Nichol (guitars/vocals) and Ben Murray (guitars/vocals), Heartsounds have added two new permanent members Trey Derbes (Drums) and Kyle Camarillo (Bass). Drifter was recorded over a two month period beginning in February 2011 and the band have once again tapped Zack Ohren to helm producing duties along with the help of Epitaph founder and Bad Religion member Brett Gurewitz.

Drifter is fast, modern, melodic punk with many different influences evident within the record including hints of 80's bands like Queen and Fleetwood Mac while keeping the intensity of 90’s era punk. “The songs are more thought-out, more riff-driven, and definitely more complex” says, Ben Murray.

Title track, "Drifter” highlights the themes of the album lyrically and musically with catchy chorus hooks and fast rhythms, making it the “pop punk” anthem of the album. “Elements" takes on the darker side with melodic riffs and has a guest vocal appearance by Jason Cruz from STRUNG OUT. “Nothing Happens for a Reason,” the album closer, is an song about coming to grips with losing someone close, which sums up the melancholy tones of the record.

It’s a fact: without guitarist Kris Norris, Darkest Hour are just not as, well, kick-ass when it comes to crafting their songs anymore. But hold on now - this actually works in The Human Romance’s favor, sort of. Once you come to terms with the fact that the days of popping out “Doomsayer” or “A Paradox With Flies” are over for the band, then you get to appreciate this year’s album for what it is: a step in the right direction. You see, in 2009 Darkest Hour stated that the band was having a tough time together, and that year’s effort, The Eternal Return, definitely showed it. The album just didn’t feel like a Darkest Hour album – there was no theme, okay, the fucking thing just didn’t flow as one cohesive whole.
The difference here, then, and the main reason why The Human Romance is likely to be well-received by fans, is that this album actually does flow well. The melodic death metal songs on The Human Romance may not be as up to par to the band’s pre-2009 work, but the whole thing is pretty damn consistent, with each song offering the listener its own varying, if small, nuances to pick out and remember. 

 

Darkest Hour even try their hand at another instrumental epic in “Terra Solaris”, something the band hasn’t tried to do since Hidden Hands of a Sadist Nation’s “Veritas, Aequitas”. Their attempt is admirable, if unexceptional, but you have to appreciate The Human Romance’s tracklisting as it offers album highlight “Beyond the Life You Know” to close the album off, instead of the plodding of the former. The closer is a song meant for all the fans of the band, a culmination of what makes Darkest Hour such a good band to begin with - ripping guitar riffs, a belter of a chorus - and brings to mind their mid-2000s' more melodic work.
It's safe to say that Darkest Hour are not as good as they used to be - sorry, fans, but The Eternal Return and The Human Romance are both indicators of that. But the band have certainly got their bearings back this year and have made the best album that they possibly could have without Kris Norris. In context of Deliver Us, The Human Romance is disapointing, no doubt, but that's really just something we're going to have to get used to when it comes to this band's output from now on, it seems. Unless something radically changes, the only thing that Darkest Hour can now make are mere shadows of their best past work, and every highlight on The Human Romance just brings to mind even better songs that the band have already put to record. You can keep hoping for a full return to form one day, I know I will, but at the same time I doubt we'll ever hear it again. The best days of this band have already come and gone.
