Throughout the screamo scene there’s been an ongoing trend of incorporating post-rock build-ups and sweeping clean guitar parts, particularly in Europe. The sound has received a lot of criticism for being perfected and over-used. However the problem isn’t the fact that the formula has been abused, but perhaps the emphasis on the formula itself. Of course there’s nothing wrong with orchestration and great transitioning can be the crux of a group. Nevertheless, all of these symphonic groups seem to suffer from a set in stone linearity that makes every heartfelt swell sound like an exercise, never taking risks within the structure or being able to dwell in any sort of repetition or non climactic texture. The most essential part of screamo has never been dynamics or technique, but striking a chord in all of the accumulated, often dissonant, heartfelt madness; creating some sort of moment of clarity within all of the hardcore and the passion that resonates. If you look at the group I Wrote Haikus About Cannibalism in Your Yearbook, which contained members of Beau Navire, they were, in the strictest of musical senses, amateurs. The voice-cracked screams were off rhythm and would often clash with other background vocals and the guitar sounds were probably some of the cheapest ever to be put on record. Yet the lone cries of “Save me from my room. Save me from my thoughts” over lone guitar noodling created a strangely desolate effect that displayed only the most sincere passion.

Beau Navire’s Hours is a gut-wrenching synthesis of that classic touch and technical precision. While their previous LP, Life Moves, established a recognizable gloomy, lo-fi sound, their new release takes the sound and transcends it into a messy, yet extremely well crafted and produced magnum opus. The sounds on Hours are developed and professional, yet retain the fiery intensity that laced the group’s previous recordings. The songs often transition from gentle ambient guitar harmonies into short, yet effective moments of grinding rhythms and frenetic instrumental work. The group knows how to build into those soaring hardcore moments that many bands have perfected, yet they often show up unpredictably, catching the listener with a tight grip, only to let them go into noisy oddities and colorful jams. The manner in which they switch between the two sounds is displayed with beauty on tracks like “It’s Not An Art, It’s A Myth”, where the band reverses the order and forms a funky little jam, while sporadically breaking into piercing screams and tremolo rhythms. While the bands previous efforts had come off as rad collections of individual tracks, the new record has a magnificent flow, using ambient instrumentals and detailed composition to create an incredibly complete and cohesive effort.

However Hours best succeeds in its cathartic qualities; the vocalist, Trei, has this voice that pulls off the desperate, “crying at the mic” vocal technique that manages to avoid sounding contrived. He finds the most subtle, yet brilliantly orchestrated moments to release his desperate tales over, whether it be in the form of a shout or a spoken word. Hours has a sort of cryptic quality that keeps the band’s music from hitting immediately, with mostly indecipherable lyrics and unorthodox instrumentation. However the group’s music slowly grows upon the listener, grabbing at them in ways unexpected, in genuine heartfelt moments of dissonant passion and musical brilliance. I find myself writing about it too often, but there’s nothing more refreshing in music then to hear a band carefully use their resources and energy to create masked, yet relatable clashes of music and feeling that resonate in the best of ways. Beau Navire not only seize and capitalize on moments like these, but they successfully integrate the various facets of the genre to do it with finesse. An immense screamo album to remember.

Archives - 2009 Decline

Album : Decline
Release Year : 2009
Genre : Screamo | Post-Hardcore | Post-Rock

Tracklist :
01 Skvotter
02 A Sharp Increase in Decline

05 Including the Mezzanine
06 Divine Circuitry

The band sat somewhere between screamo, post hardcore and post rock and were influenced by the likes of Daitro, Envy, Red Sparowes, From Monument to Masses.

So in the midst of writing a new album, the dudes from Archives decide to disband, but luckily also decide to release the written material. And to be completely honest, after listening to this release it makes me want to cry like a girl and piss my pants out of sorrow for the loss of such a great band. This stuff is brilliant and deserves to be listened. Enjoy!

Alpinist - 2010 LICHTLÆRM

Band : Alpinist
Album : LICHTLÆRM
Release Year : 2010
Genre : Hardcore | Crust | Screamo

Tracklist :
1. Deliberate
2. Rogen
3. AIDT
4. Licht
5. Yarncarrier And Break
6. Neverest
7. Project Fatigue
8. The Cursed Word Open-Minded
9. Hak Nam
10. LÆRM

Alpinist is a Dark-Hardcore/Crust four-piece band from Münster, GERMANY.

It’s easy to ride Alpinist off as a novelty. Truly it is, as the band hasn't really made any waves in the states. Being fairly young, and originating from Germany, Alpinist haven't truly grabbed the attention of many. Their oppressive sound combined with an angry aesthetic doesn’t exactly do much in the way of creating anything revolutionary, which hasn't helped their odds of breaking out. With "Lichtlarem" being their sophomore effort, the band has a lot prove.

That being said, “Lichtlaerm” is stunningly solid. Surprisingly so, considering the general inexperienced nature of the band. It’s frenetic nature somehow feels as if it’s been polished to a sheen, and everything seems incredibly well organized and well thought out. Its crusty aesthetic creates an all around dense atmosphere, which adds a little bit of character to an otherwise chaotic and unruly album. This is where the album truly shines, in its brazen yet wonderfully refined and tightened sound. Because of this, “Lichtlaerm” is heavy but perfectly contained, offering up a bevy of dense and crushing instrumentals , complimented by some rather intense and passionate screams.

Along with the wonderfully solid sound, the production is also pretty fantastic, which helps bolster the whole affair down. While not perfect, the crude nature of the sound adds a lot to the album's feel, piling up even more character to “Lichtlaerm.” The drums are crystal clear in their tenacious crashing, and the guitars are tuned to a fine degree of heaviness and cleanliness. Everything works and sounds as it should, and the product is excellent because of it. And while a little on the grating side, the album sports some pretty decent vocals. It’s obvious they guy is putting a lot behind them, and the exuberance shines clear through something, that by all rights, should sound fairly obnoxious. Regardless, his raw emotion gives the album a certain genuine feeling, which helps the album feel a little more personal.

This unabashed emotion resonates throughout the work's entirety, making nearly every song stand out to some extent. And while it may take a few listens to appreciate, “Lichtlaerm” offers an impressive and diverse track list. There’s loads of variety throughout, making everything incredibly interesting and fresh. Aside from a few homogeneous portions of rather bland selections, the album makes very few missteps. “Licht” and “Yarncarrier And Break” offer more instrumental songs, with a heavier emphasis on mood and atmosphere, while showcasing the band's more subtle songwriting abilities. After all, Alpinist are more than a group of angry young men making angry sounding music. Rather, these tracks highlight the more creative aspects of the band's sound. Situated in the middle, the two tracks anchor the album down with a fine transition change, that is before the chaos re-ensues. ”Deliberate” is an excellent opener, as it starts off very menacing, but quickly leads into a brash and rapid combination of riffs and cymbal crashes. Chaotic and brash, the track is a great intro. “Neverest” boasts the albums most fierce and interesting track. Featuring some great guitar work and vocal interplay, the track is tremendously solid, and an all around standout. The mid-section boast a wonderful guitar piece, which truly makes its presence known in respect to the surrounding maelstrom.

With “Lichtlaerm,” Alpinist are out to show the world that they’ve got something to prove, and prove it they do. With incredibly intense and vivacious material accentuating their crusty-hardcore aesthetic, Alpinist demand to be on your radar.

Maths & Throats - 2008 Split

Band : Maths & Throats
Album : Split
Release Year : 2008
Genre : Hardcore | Chaotic | Screamo

Tracklist :
MATHS
-----------------
1. Heavy Heart
2. Statue of Her
3. Vacant
4. Breathe as it were a Story
5. Solace

THROATS
--------------------
6. Headclouds
7. Loked Blue
8. Reign of Low
9. Comedown
10. Deathnaps

Split albums can be risky endeavors. One of the artists that partakes in the split typically overshadows the other artist, or the album may have no flow whatsoever, feeling disjointed or awkward in its juxtaposition of two separate musical entities. Throats and Maths, two bands from the UK, easily sidestep this problem by engaging in the same type of business. This is not to say that their sounds are identical. Maths creates frantic screamo, while Throats produces crusty hardcore. The unifying aspect of this split album is the overall attitude present. Both Throats and Maths specialize in nasty, furious music that is not afraid to get it's hands dirty. In other words, they're both very pissed off, and it shows.
The first 5 songs of this 10 song album are allotted to Maths. No time is wasted in kicking off their short but energetic collection of songs. Opener Heavy Hearts gets right in your face almost immediately, showcasing Maths' own frenetic brand of screamo. While there are a few clean sections here and there in Maths' songs, a respite is not truly given until the short 53 second interlude entitled Breathe As If It Were A Story rolls around. By this time, Maths has blazed through 3 blasts of speedy drums, screeched vocals, and heavy guitar work, all in 7 minutes. After Breathe.. segues into Solace, the closing track to Maths' side of the split, one is treated to another piece of chaotic screamo. Although a bit homogenous, the tangible emotion behind these tracks and their brevity warrant repeated listens.

After the final notes of Solace die out, a sludgy guitar enters. Throats begin their side of the split with a slow burner, entitled Headclouds. This track is almost reminiscent of some of Pelican's work, at least until vocals enter the track. The intensely hollered vocals are full of bile and vitriol, lending the ending segment of Headclouds a sense of urgency. Throats follow this track with a crusty freak out, complete with million-mile-an-hour drums and a short guitar solo(!). Throats' side of the split continues in this vein of insanely fast tracks full of anger, interspersed with short, tasteful breakdowns. The drummer has several very impressive moments concerning double bass work, and the vocalist is instantly comparable to one Jacob Bannon, spewing lyrics with throat-ripping intensity. The guitarists serve their purpose competently, serving up down-tuned, crunchy riffs that compliment the palpitating rhythms put forth by the drummer and held together by the bassist.
Throats and Maths have crafted a fine split album, one that might remind some listeners of Converge and Agoraphobic Nosebleed's The Poacher Diaries in its consistency and savagery. Both Throats and Maths are worth a listen individually, but you can get a nice feel for each bands' personality from this split alone. Short, heavy, and to the point, you won't want to miss out on this album.

Serena Joy - 2007 Ours Will Be A Lonely Battle EP

Band : Serena Joy
Album : Ours Will Be A Lonely Battle EP
Release Year : 2007
Genre : Screamo | Post-Rock | Experimental

Tracklist :
01.Movement I
02.Movement II
03.Movement III
04.Movement IV

Serena Joy, an ambient mix of lo-fi indie, post rock and melodramatic sky torching screamo.

Something has been brewing in the Serena Joy camp for a while. Covertly stealing members from several defunct underground bands, including andtheywillriot! and Missiles of Uncertain Destinations, they've now burst back onto the scene as a formidable seven-piece band, incorporating a range of new instruments including a violin, keys and even a mini-accordion brought out especially for the live show. What's more, their new EP, holding the appropriately gallant title “Ours Will Be A Lonely Battle”, may well turn out to be the most brazenly epic thing you have ever heard!

Split into four tracks or “movements” this 20-minute cinematic composition voyages through dynamic late-90s screamo territory, taking in sprawling sections of weaving instrumentation and post-rock ambience. Narrated by a mixture of raw screaming vocals, harmonious female singing, snatches of background chatter and poignant laments, it draws to a memorable finale with an extended spoken-word passage residing behind driving instrumentation that gradually gathers intensity; an unwavering stream of consciousness, falling over itself to get the words out, and ultimately climaxing with a coming together of voices in the rousing sing-along.

Understated, it is not. But although victory appears to ring hollow for the protagonists at the heart of the record’s concept, for the band itself this is far from the truth. Overblown, but splendidly so; Ours Will Be A Lonely Battle indulges in many of the great aspects of music, raging war on tired and bloated genres by ripping them apart and pillaging the best bits - much as sadly defunct Scottish five-piece The Fall Of Boss Koala did so well. And, before you say it, yes - I am fully aware of the romanticised nature of some of the statements contained in this review, but when faced with an affair of such magnitude, just you try describing it without getting a little carried away!

Throats - 2010 Throats

Band : Throats
Album : Throats
Release Year : 2010
Genre : Hardcore | Chaotic

Tracklist:
1. Wake
2. My Hands Are Cold
3. Fuck Life
4. Failgiver
5. Something Low From This Way Comes
6. Oaken/Wait

Throats definitely takes things to the next level with their debut full-length. In the past, this hardcore band from across the Atlantic has been hailed pretty highly. “Converge on acid,” the Gallows front man called them, and Throats was also pegged as one NME’s “bands to look out for.” That’s pretty hefty for a band that’s only released a few demos and splits. In my opinion, Throats manages to withstand the expectations that have been built around them like a moat; they don’t necessarily hurdle the moat in a flying leap, per se, but they get to the other side safely and surely. What I’m trying to say is- Throats isn’t without faults, of course. The album is a bit short-lived. Clocking in at less than 20 minutes, Throats never quite get a chance to cement their style and make their presence known. Throats is certainly dynamic, but this inhibits their ability to create a truly memorable experience as the album tends to drift.

Now that the nasty part (ephemeral as it is) is out of the way, let’s move on to the diverting aspect, shall we? For starters, it becomes clear right away that Throats is a fierce and even harrowing experience. To revisit the allegory that began this review- Throats is a rough and unrelenting band that exerts an incredible amount of sheer energy. The opening chords of “Wake” aren’t very telling; deliberate and slow, this is as much a break as Throats is willing to give. For a more revealing picture of Throats, fast forward to “*** Life” and feast your ears on the collision of incomprehensible screams (a la hardcore punk style) and highly technical riffs. The more noteworthy moments, though, come in the variation on Throats, the times they differ from the tried-and-true formula of loud/abrasive + loud/abrasive + loud/abrasive = loud/abrasive. All but one of the songs fit into intense 2 minute stampedes, and that is the ambitious closer. Listen to “Oaken/Wait” (not too many times though- I don’t want your ears to fall off) and hear Throat’s ability to construct a 7-minute epic. With layers and riffs galore, the song even includes a sample in the background that eventually erupts to a woman’s shrill screams before tailspinning down into a valley of minimal guitar strums to smooth over the damage done by Throats.

Alpinist - 2009 minus.mensch

Band : Alpinist
Album : minus.mensch
Release Year : 2009
Genre : Harcore | Crust | Screamo

Tracklist :
 1.Nighttime Poet Daytime Dead
2.Schalterhygiene
3.A is for Army of Slaves
4.Rost
5.2te Klasse Bahnabteil
6.Amuse Yourself to Death
7.Delta Flood of Ignorance
8.The Charme of Dominating
9.From Groveling to Running in Less tha
10.This Song Will Not Save Your Life
11.Outro

Alpinist is a band that hasn’t been heard or experienced by enough people. They hail from Münster, Germany and play a style of crust (a sludgy brand of hardcore punk) tinged with screamo. Minus.Mensch (2009) marks the bands’ first full-length release. It’s full of raw energy, impressive transitions and melancholic dissonance. To be honest, I was expecting the production on this album to be of a lot lesser quality, but it is in fact more than sufficient. The harrowing intro riff in ‘Nighttime Poet, Daytime Dead’ is a great way to kick off the album. It builds beautifully and introduces you into the marvelously emotional landscape created by the band; something most listeners will be thankful for. The band has many things going for it, and the drummer is no exception. Hendrik is really a stand-out on this disc, as he supplies lots of impressive and tasteful fills. Vocals come in the form of a three-pronged attack, with both guitarists as well as the bassist providing screams and growls. I think the utilization of more than one harsh vocalist can be redundant and perhaps cliche at times, but such is not the case here. It works beautifully, actually, as the dynamic between medium-ranged, from-the-chest shouts and throaty growls creates a consistent contrast. It’s a vocal approach that can be compared to Circle Takes the Square in a sense, only with more focus and a little less chaos.

There’s really no weak tracks on Minus.Mensch, each track brings just as much intensity as the last. For every crushing section full of distressed screaming and filthy sludginess from the band, there seems to be a more melodic section waiting right around the corner where the band really succeeds in creating that emotional landscape I referred to earlier. This landscape reaches its purest and arguably most impressive form during the emotionally charged outro track, aptly named ‘Outro’. It’s a very impressive instrumental, which builds for the first minute and a half before exploding into a gorgeous melodic part at around 1:45. One gripe I have with the outro track is that I would’ve liked to hear some sort of vocals, at least one emotional ‘give it all’ type of scream to go along with what the band managed to create. There is a really good melodic riff which defines ‘A is for Army of Slaves’, a great build-up/transition section in ‘The Charme of Dominating’ which leads to a nice little outro riff, and tracks ‘Schalterhygiene’ and ‘2te Klasse Bahnabteil’ are great, brief punches to the face. And we all love those.

Minus.Mensch is a well constructed piece of work. It’s intense, it’s emotional, it’s focused.. And it’s worth checking out. -Xplisit (sputnikmusic)

Love Like... Electrocution - 2003 Love Like... Electrocution

Band : Love Like... Electrocution
Album : Love Like... Electrocution
Release Year : 2003
Genre : Experimental | Screamo | Progressive

Tracklist :
01 We Only Fuck to Black Sabbath vol.4
02 The Truth of the Matter is I Am Satan
03 We've Built Our Tombs and Now We're Sleeping in Them
04 Das Plague (French for Germans)
05 Hunger Like Numb Toes on an Os
06 With Horses in Her Eyes, She Spat Like a Wildcat
07 The Graduate Walks with a Dist
08 The Tropics of Cancer,Capricorn and a Smashed Face
09 This Charade Has Lasted Past the Curtains Fall
10 Tips for Avoiding the Clap. 1.
11 I May Have Cried a River for H

Love Like…Electrocution, Australia’s own spazz princes, are Down Under’s answer to bands like Hot Cross and Saetia. They blend screamo and metal in one fucked-up stew and spit the contents in your face, begging for a reaction.
LLE are a sextet that uses all of their members to their full potential. Like the above-mentioned groups, the music here is often technical and complex. There’s a lot going on and a lot of energy contained within five inches of compact disc. Often the drummer is going crazy with some fast scattershot beats or keeping the members in check with a precisely executed breakdown. The guitars are overlapping and mesh together. There’s some high speed noodling and a driving rhythm. All of this compliments the dual vocalist structure well. The lead vocals are screamed in a higher register with a strained voice. The backups are shouted back and they are often in unison.
Thankfully with song titles as ironic, comic and nonsensical as: “We Only Fuck to Black Sabbath Vol. 4″ & “Tips for Avoiding the Clap. 1 I Wouldn’t Piss on a Scorpion if it Was on Fire,” LLE is a group that doesn’t take itself too seriously. The messages aren’t heavy handed, and in fact without a lyric sheet they are almost indecipherable. It would be nice to know what all the fuss and screaming was about, but unfortunately you don’t get that satisfaction.
Overall, though, this is a mixed effort. The group, with all the musicians’ complexities and intricacies, is tight but could be tighter. The songs are short and therefore deliver a to-the-point punch, but after listening to the disc on repeat it can begin to sound like just under 20 minutes of straight screaming, each song no different than the last. So in one simple statement, at times Love Like…Electrocution can be either the ultimate motivational tool and energy pill or the ultimate headache inducer.

2. ...Eppure Aveva Torto
3. Incontrarsi A Copenhagen
4. Punto Omega (Dove Il Cuore e Lontano Da Tutto)
5. Punto Omega (Il Lamento Del Tempo)

As part of the reality whose connections are made?? by quantum theory, then the laws of nature do not lead to a complete determination of what is happening in space and time, the occurrence (within the frequencies determined by means of connections) is rather put the game of chance. In this cosmic chaos suspended between hesitation and meetings in the rain are born the Heisenberg, a beautiful surprise that comes directly from the capital city. Their debut EP to the general public with the curious title "Imaginary Lines Mathematical Between Heaven and Earth". Five powerful traces for a period of seventeen minutes. The Heisenberg are difficult to describe because they are aligned with their own style very personal. A mixture of Raein, Do Nascimento, Sed Non Satiata, Suis La Lune and mixed with the atmosphere of the most delicate Penfold. I could say screamo but it seems simplistic primarily because hearing this EP is perceived from every pore the desire of the group to move toward more personal musical territory. To breathe the beauty of the atmosphere and the power of their sound just feel "Meeting in Copenhagen" and "omega point (the lament of the time)", you will feel that the whole class knows this issue. The latest copies of the EP in physical format are available in limited edition of http://heisenberg.bigcartel.com, while in March will also vinyl. The Heisenberg proved to have both the muscles and the head to be seen whether they will know when you grow up to give us that crisp feeling you have when you hurtling running at full speed. -impattosonoro.it

Solomon Solomon - 2012 Lent- or- ink on

Band : Solomon Solomon
Album : Lent- or- ink on

Genre : Screamo | Post-Rock

Tracklist :
1. A being creates itself
2. Through the gaze of looking in
3. The nerve of the nerve of the nerve
4. Nereid demonstrates
5. Philia
6. To do term in a constant mentality

Solomon Solomon was a screamo/post-rock from Virginia that lasted from 2009 till 2012. The band features members of Perfect Future, Age Sixteen, Studying, and probably a million other bands. Sadly this is their only release, besides a few demo tracks. They’ve been working on perfecting this one album over the entire lifetime of their band, so the amount of effort put into it means you’re in for some pretty passionate stuff. The style of screamo they play is very fast and dark, but also has plenty of moments of Explosions in the Sky style twinkling post-rock and even some Age Sixteen like moment. Their style is best compared to Funeral Diner and City of Caterpillar, but the thing that shine with them is the use of the dynamics. The flow of them is so much more great than even Funeral Diner. Each calm is as beautiful as the last, and with each intense explosion of distortion, blast beats, and screaming, you feel the power and aggression. If more screamo was like this, rather than the string of “twinkle daddy screamo” or the simple octave chord non-sense, then I feel the scene would be a lot more thriving and be looked at as being more mature. Great band, that had to go too quickly. -swimminglikeminnows

Loma Prieta is a San Francisco screamo band, featuring members of Archeopteryx, Punch, Sailboats and us, haunted bodies. Loma Prieta play great spazzy, chaotic, and at times melodic music similar to bands such as Orchid, Off-Minor, and Ampere. Flourishes of melody show up from time to time, giving me vibes of bands such as Funeral Diner and City of Caterpillar. Here is all of their earlier recorded output.
