"Catholic Guilt Or The Queerest Of Thoughts" by All Human is a highly textural Electronic Indie album.

Songs within the album draw the line between a chilled out vibe, and an urgency that excites and draws the listener in. This combination creates an interesting conflict that gets resolved somewhere between heavy electronic textures, eerie songwriting and vocals, and a constant driving alt rock spirit.

Songs like "Oh My My Boy (This Island Has A Sex Drive)" start off with sparse production, a raw beat, and then the vocals flesh out that skeleton (along with techno noise) with dirty lyrics and an array of dynamically different vocal harmonies. The result may have taken 2 years, but we totally feel it was worth the wait. Empire! Empire! lay down 2 emotionally charged tracks on Side A, while Rika uses literally all the space they can to craft a beautiful track (with a splash of Flugelhorn!) on Side B.

Sirs is a four-piece punk band from upstate New York. Formed in 2009 after meeting at school, original members consisted of Justin Jurgens, Dave Benton, Kyle Seely and Hart Seely. They released a six-song EP Vas Deferens in may of 2010. After a summer tour, Dave left the band and was soon succeeded by Mike Caridi. They then released a split 7” in December 2010 with Chalk Talk and their first Topshelf release in 2011 with run, WALK! (Holy Roar Records). They are anticipating their firs full-length release in July 2012. Primary musical influences include The Band, Anti-Nowhere League and Electric Light Orchestra.

Box Social are an internet two piece who just released their debut EP Unwound. The band consists of two people, Justice Claggett, responsible for vocals & lyrics as well as Casey VanAntwerp, responsible for everything else. They are from Jackson, MI & Nampa, ID and play a twinkly kind of emo with mostly yearning vocals though there are some awesome screams towards the end. There's nothing groundbreaking but if you enjoy twinkly emo this will be right up your alley. Justice also does vocals in Enchiridion whom I haven't heard yet but I assume are awesome. -projectburnt

After shit hit the fan with Heartsfield Landing, Matt Huszar, one of Heartsfield’s many come-and-go drummers, started playing with guitarist Vasya Kochura as a new pastime. Vocalist Jake Dubois, also of Heartsfield Landing, got involved when he became acquainted with Vasya and their chemistry instantly formed a great haven for collaboration.
So, things got rolling and they had a few promising songs but they were short an instrument. Alexandre Clement, bassist and yet another former member of Heartsfield Landing, was recruited in winter ‘08 to complete the band now known as The Sharpest.

Despite three quarters of the band originating from Heartsfield Landing, The Sharpest ditched the familiar pop-punk sound for a smooth, blues aura with alt-rock influences from such artists as Portugal. The Man, The Fall of Troy, Radiohead, Pierce The Veil, The Mars Volta and as cities burn.
Though they’ve only played a handful of shows, the band’s following stretches from their hometown in Acton, Massachusetts down to Cape Cod and is quickly expanding.

Perfect Future returns with an ambitious sophomore LP that shows the group have really hit their stride. The musicianship has grown tenfold, finding tighter arrangements and steadier footing. And that's before mentioning that this release is a concept album based on WW I. The lyrics read like a documentary mixed with a diary, and do a marvelous job portraying the many ways war is hell.

It’s hard to know what to make of Dowsing’s debut EP, ‘All I Could Find Was You’. Despite the band’s youth they clearly know what they are aiming for, and that is heart-warming indie-emo with a decidedly melodic edge. This is essentially what you get here, and this is by no means a bad thing. However, the band toe a very thin line between a scant, yet uplifting sound, and a timid, overly-soft one. This battle is immediately obvious, and ultimately it’s inescapability defines the record, as well as the listener’s propensity to like it or not.

The EP’s closer ‘Joking/Laughing’ is microcosmic of this battle. Building from an embarrassingly timid opening to a gloriously overblown finale, it is uncomfortable one minute, and delightful the next. Despite sporadic cringe-worthy moments, Dowsing tend to exhibit enough charm to save themselves and this lies mostly in their solid song writing abilities, and their generally likeable demeanour. ‘Amateur Cartography’ is a mid-tempo ode to the joys of touring, and despite its structural linearity it remains engaging throughout. Meanwhile, ‘…And That’s Why You Leave A Note!’’s youthful sense of yearning ultimately rescues vocals that sound like someone trying to sound excited on Valium.

Elsewhere, their tired charm sounds far more comfortable, and when this is the case the results are far more pleasing. The reduced pace and stoned presence of the keyboard in ‘Maxwell’ perfectly compliment the vocals’ characteristic weariness and this means that they don’t feel uncomfortably timid. Furthermore it’s distant gang vocals proclaiming “no more living in the past/we’ll be high but we’ll try our best”, perfectly fit the song’s drug-like haze. At the other end of the spectrum, ‘Driving’ is characterised by exciting contrasts between hoarse cries and sleepy vocals, and between focussed chord progressions and ‘twinkling’ guitar melodies.

When Dowsing go all out, one way or another, they really shine; when they find themselves attempting to compromise the results can be fairly uncomfortable. Slower moments such as ‘Maxwell’ and more ragged tracks such as ‘Driving’ are exceptions, but generally Dowsing occupy a mid-tempo, lukewarm middle-ground. This is not necessarily a bad thing, but at times Dowsing are too compromising for their own good. Fortunately however, they are also too charming and endearing to dismiss just yet, and ultimately ‘All I Could Find Was You’ shows a great deal of potential and immediate value. -Richard Craig (Sputnikmusic)

PAN are an uplifting instrumental band who love to play happy and epic music. They’ve released their first e.p in March 2011 called “Post Rock is Not Dead.” They are also currently preparing to record a full length album that will be released in late February/early March titke “These are the things I love, and I want to share them with you.

Lead by a twin guitar onslaught and fortified by an airtight rhythm section, the band resists the urge to fill every moment with a barrage of notes, opting instead to explore tension and release to great effect, as Pan’s songs drift from epic passages of sublime beauty to crushing assaults of melodic intensity. And they’ve got the chops to match their formidable composition skills, which are complex but never condescending. You don’t need a degree in Advanced Music Theory to enjoy Pan. Two ears in good working order will do. Oh, and a hand for throwing goat. You’re gonna need it.

Nonagon is a 3-piece, punk rock concern that formed in 2003 and practices in the Logan Square neighborhood of Chicago. They are the proud purveyors of a loud set of short songs that have unconventional hooks and changes but still (in the one-time-cool vernacular) “rock”. The band consists of drummer Tony Aimone (who used to play in The Blue Meanies, J. Davis Trio, and Taylor), bass player Robert Gomez (formerly of Der Lugomen and one oneth of Martian Law), and guitar player John Hastie (who was once in Jumpknuckle). They hope to soon create a lasting audio documentation of their existence, and they like to play shows but have no idea how to dress for them.

People Live Everywhere is a 5-song EP pressed on 180g vinyl. It was recorded over 3 days in the spring of 2011 at Kerguelen Studio, a one-room, all-analog facility in Astoria, NYC run by Justin Foley – he of the band The Austerity Program - who wielded the mics and turned the knobs.
People Live Everywhere is a decidedly DIY affair. All planning, promotion, selling, and funding has been handled by the band. They’re pretty dang proud of how it’s all gone so far.

When the New York based noise rock trio introduced themselves to the public with their homonymous debut, the torrentous response of the press / media was immediate. Triggering the critics' immeasurable hunger for newfound adjectives, A Place to Bury Strangers was usually parted with several words of bombastic enthusiasm, like cranium-crashing and bull-rushing, tagging the band as "New Yorke's loudest". Now, 5 years after that small triumph, a slightly worse second album and a couple of Eps, the nu-gazers return with Onwards To The Wall, a five-piece Ep that finds the band in less frustration, which seems to inevitably translate as "less inspiration".

Onwards to the Wall kicks in with "I Lost You", a song that resuscitates the cozy, bass driven, frenetic riffing that made A Place to Bury Strangers a ferocious, yet captivating listen. The seething guitar frenzy calms down though, and this becomes evident soon enough, as the familiar abrasiveness paves the way for a mature, post-punk approach in songs like title the track, where the quick paced strumming is replaced with downhearted murmuring melodies. This transition marks a mild downfall, as "Nothing Will Surprise Me" is pretty much a boring track, which several distorted leads can't save, with "Drill it Up" being completely uninteresting and devoid of that seducing fuzz or beat which the Ep promises by its beginning. "So Far Away" though, catches a murky groove which alongside Ackermann's gothy delivery feels wispy and catchy.

Onwards To The Wall neither marks A Place to Bury Strangers' degradation nor finds them evolving their sound. Having lost a load of the stomping power that characterized their previous releases, the band seems to slowly settle in the safer, post-punk environments. And while it is not clear that they have settled for such a direction, it is improbable that their visceral outcries will stop echoing in a future that musically seems to delve deeper and deeper in the noisy territories. -scissorlocked

New release from one of my favorite groups - French Seila Chiara, which has existed since 2007 and has already released two albums, recorded a split with Orfèvre and lighted on two compilations of his record label's Tokyo Jupiter Compilation. in the group are five people, with three of them - the guitarists that in itself is unusual for this kind of music. but in general the guys play a very emotional music with extraordinary beauty texts. probably more than I can not write due to the small amounts of information about the group. this EP could have ordered in August 2011, but now she appeared on the Internet. on the official site you can download the old records, by the way.

Experimental group based around the nucleus of brothers Thomas Jefferson and Dylan Thomas Walter, which has mostly emphasized dissonance, extended free improvisation and getting too fucked up to remember what they just played. Originally formed in 2007 as Thoughtful Diamond Bites in Portland, Oregon, Use Value counts among its illustrious alumni Austin Piccone, Denny Hansen and Teysha Garrison. Their performances could be characterized as abrasive, awkward, under-attended and occasionally interesting. In 2011, the group reformed with the only original members, the Walter brothers, to record and release The Golden Trough, for sale at bandcamp.com.

A complete departure from 2011's "The Golden Trough," Use Value's new record, "Inaccuracy Vs. Confusion" finds the band exploring more melodic and structurally refined territory. The album explores the indie guitar rock tradition rooted in the 1990s in a way that is both fresh and familiar, incorporating subtle elements of prog/math-rock and post-hardcore.

Here we find Innards completing their world domination via 7" splits campaign with arguably the coolest of the bunch.  It should be no surprise that I love the shit out of The Reptilian, so when I heard that this split was taking place, I got really excited.  Rightfully so, I found, as soon as I heard the meltdown at 1:23 into Innards' "Goro."  "How do I explain myself," Leo grates over the sludgiest line in the Innards catalog.  Then they keep going.  For anyone that got kind of bored with Innards two minute songs that race past you, here are two keepers.  Aforementioned "Goro" clocks in at 4:14 and features some very cool (read: more focused) guitar work that results in a near Fugazi-esque line for a couple seconds and "No Money, More Problems" sounds like someone flailing in cold water, trying not to drown.  The Reptilian just continue evolving.  Totally frank lines from the Jowls' split like "Your swag is none of my concern" find their brothers and sisters here among such passages as "How does shitting on your friend's name make up for your lack of shame?" from "Gold Blooded."  Ever since they became a three piece, the bass became just as prominent as Russ' guitar work, and it sounds FANTASTIC here.  If you like the fuzzy, chorded bass sound, then you've just found two of your favorite songs.  Please support Carucage records on their venture into putting out some of the best music around.  Rumor has it they're going to be getting Carucage watches soon.  How cool, right? -CtD
