Throughout the screamo scene there’s been an ongoing trend of incorporating post-rock build-ups and sweeping clean guitar parts, particularly in Europe. The sound has received a lot of criticism for being perfected and over-used. However the problem isn’t the fact that the formula has been abused, but perhaps the emphasis on the formula itself. Of course there’s nothing wrong with orchestration and great transitioning can be the crux of a group. Nevertheless, all of these symphonic groups seem to suffer from a set in stone linearity that makes every heartfelt swell sound like an exercise, never taking risks within the structure or being able to dwell in any sort of repetition or non climactic texture. The most essential part of screamo has never been dynamics or technique, but striking a chord in all of the accumulated, often dissonant, heartfelt madness; creating some sort of moment of clarity within all of the hardcore and the passion that resonates. If you look at the group I Wrote Haikus About Cannibalism in Your Yearbook, which contained members of Beau Navire, they were, in the strictest of musical senses, amateurs. The voice-cracked screams were off rhythm and would often clash with other background vocals and the guitar sounds were probably some of the cheapest ever to be put on record. Yet the lone cries of “Save me from my room. Save me from my thoughts” over lone guitar noodling created a strangely desolate effect that displayed only the most sincere passion.

Beau Navire’s Hours is a gut-wrenching synthesis of that classic touch and technical precision. While their previous LP, Life Moves, established a recognizable gloomy, lo-fi sound, their new release takes the sound and transcends it into a messy, yet extremely well crafted and produced magnum opus. The sounds on Hours are developed and professional, yet retain the fiery intensity that laced the group’s previous recordings. The songs often transition from gentle ambient guitar harmonies into short, yet effective moments of grinding rhythms and frenetic instrumental work. The group knows how to build into those soaring hardcore moments that many bands have perfected, yet they often show up unpredictably, catching the listener with a tight grip, only to let them go into noisy oddities and colorful jams. The manner in which they switch between the two sounds is displayed with beauty on tracks like “It’s Not An Art, It’s A Myth”, where the band reverses the order and forms a funky little jam, while sporadically breaking into piercing screams and tremolo rhythms. While the bands previous efforts had come off as rad collections of individual tracks, the new record has a magnificent flow, using ambient instrumentals and detailed composition to create an incredibly complete and cohesive effort.

However Hours best succeeds in its cathartic qualities; the vocalist, Trei, has this voice that pulls off the desperate, “crying at the mic” vocal technique that manages to avoid sounding contrived. He finds the most subtle, yet brilliantly orchestrated moments to release his desperate tales over, whether it be in the form of a shout or a spoken word. Hours has a sort of cryptic quality that keeps the band’s music from hitting immediately, with mostly indecipherable lyrics and unorthodox instrumentation. However the group’s music slowly grows upon the listener, grabbing at them in ways unexpected, in genuine heartfelt moments of dissonant passion and musical brilliance. I find myself writing about it too often, but there’s nothing more refreshing in music then to hear a band carefully use their resources and energy to create masked, yet relatable clashes of music and feeling that resonate in the best of ways. Beau Navire not only seize and capitalize on moments like these, but they successfully integrate the various facets of the genre to do it with finesse. An immense screamo album to remember.

The Crimson Curse - 1999 Greatest Hits

Band : The Crimson Curse
Album : Greatest Hits
Release Year : 1999
Genre : Emo Violence | Noisecore | Experimental

Tracklist :
1. Funeral Empire
2. Radiation Blue
3. Both Feet in the Grave
4. Sweet Baby Jesus
5. Blood Thirsty Lust
6. Velvet Flesh Design
7. Psycho 75
8. I Liner
9. Rat Romance
10. Black Dye #15
11. Goldfish

The Crimson Curse had the sort of dark, swirling lava people that like Chuck Berry and Little Richard had in their veins. That edgy, wide-eyed angst, and that quaking, uneasy suspicion that all is not right in the world and maybe, just maybe, you (as that outta-step boy/girl with guitar/piano/voice) are the one to change things. (note: we’re talkin’ about rock ‘n’ roll in its purest form … back when it was still BLACK, and full of all the sweaty, howling, horny shit that’s since been polished over.
The Three One G-released Greatest Hits, is a compilation re-pressing (and in the case of a few songs, re-recording) of the Crimson Curse’s “Both Feet in the Grave” LP, and their split 7? with the Festival of Dead Deer, along with one new song, “Blood Thirsty Lust.”
Track one, “Funeral Empire,” starts off with ultra-dramatic swelling guitar and drum noise, and then careens into sloppy, incoherent vocals and urgent, Le Shok-y keyboards.
Before ending a little more than a minute later, it already establishes a mood for the album, which, depending on where you were in yr teeny bopper days, might just make you wanna be 14 and stone cold stupid again — diving into a pit fulla big, retarded skinheads and Skrewdriver fans jacked up on shitty El Cajon speed. And anyone that’s actually Been There, and has felt that kinda fever, knows that it’s not exactly a bad thing. No, it’s an energy thing, a bored thing, a teenage thing, a passion thing, etc — all comprised of far too many elements and personal particulars to diss or demonize.
And, going on that same jag, by the time the chorus “plain-clothed pig never knows how ta dig” gets chanted over and over again, yr either a fan feeling that old free-for-all pit nostalgia, or a hater desperately jonesing for a Get Up Kids record to wallow in, cry upon and ferget you’ve ever heard of the mean ol’ Crimson Curse.

John Belushi once said something in an interview that recalls the next song, “Radiation Blue.” Stupid-drunk, sarcastic, and feigning sincerity, he told the interviewer, “You know what I love to do? Get FUCKED UP.” Yep, that same kinda mindless, skullbeating mania is clear and present this track, a feedback ‘n’ banshee scream opera not unlike Pearson’s Locust, or even speedier animals like Jenny Piccolo or Black Dice.

Then, from there, all the way to the last song, “Goldfish,” the band (also comprised of Damean Alexander, Michael Cooper, Christopher Sprague, and Evona Waschinski) follows suit with crazed, gore-splattered noise and heavy, camp-free organ work. And while they’re all pretty damn good songs, “Goldfish,” ends up being the stand-out track.

Starting off with a bouncy Southern Cal drumbeat almost identical to the one that kicks off Johnny Thunders’ “One Track Mind,” “Goldfish” then goes into a heavily rhythmic Swing Kids sort of intro and rips into the organ with a little more structure and a far less violent style. “Goldfish” is probably the most intelligent track on the album, but that snarling, nervy wolfish anger is still there, still somewhere in the back of everything, lurking and ready to tear the shit out of anything that comes near. This is heavy music, in terms of nasty, grumpy malice, and song for song, the album doesn’t let you forget that, or second guess in the least.
This sorta smack-to-the-head is straight-out life affirming. -Adam Gnad

A Flower Kollapsed - 2012 A Flower Kollapsed

Band : A Flower Kollapsed
Album : A Flower Kollapsed
Release Year : 2012
Genre : Chaotic | Screamo | Emo Violence

Tracklist :
1-  Maimed
2-  All nature is my nature
3-  Mud
4-  Revolt
5-  Uniformity
6-  Details
7-  Animal
8-  Poisoned Tissue
9-  Hollow Men

Macina Dischi "Alluminium Series" releases A Flower Kollapsed's third album. A Flower Kollapsed is an Italian band living in Orsago (Treviso); thanks to the success of their first two albums and to plenty of collaborations with both national and international record labels, they carved out their own space not only in Italy but also abroad.
In a little bit less than half an hour this album which is called like the band itself, is the result of 7 years of activity and live concerts in almost every European country. Mathcore and noise-core impact come one after the other destroying everything, a violence that says to the listener: no rules. The album goes beyond the simply idea of creating music, in fact the songs are an expression of personal considerations about the consumerism of the contemporary capitalist society.

In particular in the lyrics there are many references to nature, which is seen as a generative force, see for example (animal, all nature is my nature, mud, uniformity). Since we come from nature and we depend on nature for our existence we should protect it, while under today's monetary system, natural resources are exploited for profit. This is a really well-focused album; each track on this album has been carefully crafted in ways that ensure each song reaches its full potential.

Laeirs - 2011 Laeirs EP

Band : Laeirs
Album : Laeirs EP
Release Year : 2011
Genre : Emo Violence | Screamo

Tracklist :
1.In The Vineyard
2.Unattached
3.Letters
4.Brink Of Bathos
5.Chest Of Locked Drawers
6.Dreary

This skramz band are nice little freshies, existing in the exciting new Sunshine Coast scene comprising primarily of DIY garage and house shows, thus breeding their own style of hardcore, screamo and punk music. The songs show some nice variety in melody, moving seamlessly from slower moving stuff to straight up thrashy parts, but still being able to maintain their average song length under one minute.

This debut EP is a good first start for this productive band, and it always makes me happy when great new Aussie screamo bands start up, as we have lacked in the past 3-4 years much of the great screamo kicking round in the early 00's. Recorded by Chris Brownbill, the dude behind all the best new DIY Brissy recordings. I look forward to seeing these dudes live, screaming their little hearts out in a garage or house show near you. -ausgrind

Crocus - 2012 Our Memories Dress Me In A Dead Lust

Band : Crocus
Album : Our Memories Dress Me In A Dead Lust
Release Year : 2012
Genre : Chaotic | Hardcore | Emo Violence

Tracklist :
1. If Love Is Madness, Then I'm Madly In Love With You
2. This Is Pain
3. 222E
4. All Of You
5. You Don't Belong
6. Our Memories Dress Me In A Dead Lust
7. Left To Bruise
8. Not Alone
9. Revival

Crocus have been kicking around the UK and Europe for some time now. But that is in no way presented to you as a negative fact. The best things come to those whose wait, those who build and nurture music, to achieve the best possible result. Don’t believe me? Only interested in whatever hyped-sloppy-bullshit-that-hasn’t-even-played-live-yet is cool this week? Well fuck off then. Look at Throats and Rolo Tomassi – contemporaries of Crocus who built their reputation over a multitude of low-key releases over years of practice and refinement….

Crocus’ history lies in a classic screamo lineage that encompasses everyone from the intensity of p.99 to the epic melodicism of Daitro to the crazed, brutal schizo insanity of The Assistant. However, over time, this is a band that has grown ever more heavy, without ever losing their ‘turn-on-a-dime’ time-changes or melodic nature. We are talking classic rock riffage funneled through octave pedals and metallic distortion. Peaks, troughs and breaktaking undulations.

A true power-quartet, no one element of this band stands out more than another. Frantic (bordering on) virtuoso guitar and bass playing jostle with manic edge-of-sanity but ever-solid drumming, iced with a vicious, angry emotional onslaught of a vocal. With ‘Our Memories Dress Me In A Dead Lust’ Crocus have presented a concise, epic album that will leave you reeling.

Loma Prieta - 2012 I.V.

Band : Frenetic Affair
Album : I.V.
Release Year : 2012
Genre : Screamo | Emo Violence

Tracklist :
 1. Fly By Night
2. Torn Portrait
3. Reproductive
4. Trilogy 4 "Momentary"
5. Trilogy 5 "Half Cross"
6. Trilogy 6 "Forgetting"
7. Untitled
8. Uniform
9. Uselessness
10. Aside From this Distant Shadow, There is
Nothing Left
11. Biography
12. Diamond Tooth

Formed in 2005, Loma Prieta have been a mainstay of the Bay Area hardcore community for more than half a decade. In that time they have released four 12 inch records and two 7 inch records mostly on their own label, Discos Huelga. They have also toured the U.S., Japan, Canada, and Mexico numerous times, all while members play in several other hardcore bands (Punch, Beau Navire, Us Haunted Bodies).

While Loma Prieta’s sound is difficult to describe, it is clear that they come from the rich tradition of creative Bay Area hardcore bands such as Mohinder, Funeral Diner, Bread and Circuits, Yaphet Kotto, and Indian Summer. Eschewing sub-genres in favor of organically writing songs that are personally fulfilling, each Loma Prieta record is substantially different from the last. Nonetheless, Loma Prieta have managed to forge a distinctive form of expression that is entirely their own.

For “I.V.” the band’s Deathwish debut, Loma Prieta once again worked with longtime collaborator Jack Shirley (Atomic Garden Studio). With his guidance Loma Prieta tracked to tape 12 songs intensely emotional songs. Written during a time of great personal suffering and transition for the band "I.V." is the creative culmination of those collective experiences. From the opening breath of “Fly by Night”, Loma Prieta crash and bang melody and discord together into one beautiful work of art. This grinding theme continues throughout "I.V." in stunning songs like the aptly named three parter "Trilogy 4, 5, and 6". Creating a powerful and unpredictable ebb and flow to their emotional outpouring. As the dust settles on the distorted haze in closer "Diamond Tooth", an artistic coherency and clarity emerges that can only be described as Loma Prieta. A new kind of melancholy chaos that should be familiar, yet challenging, to those who enjoy bands like Love Lost But Not Forgotten, Pg. 99, La Quiete, and the ilk.

Shikari - 2004 1999-2003

Tracklist :
01. Post Student Syndrome
02. Copycat
03. Robot Wars
04. ...And Just When I Thought I Had It All Figured Out
05. Written In Some Depressing Mood

18. Fall On Proverb (Unbroken)
19. Ons Land

Screamo has a lot more balls than ever really given credit for; while many people who are truly unfamiliar will wrongly accuse bands such as My Chemical Romance or Taking Back Sunday as the genre, real screamo easily has the potential to match metal in sheer aggression. While bands like the Russian Reka combine post-metal to beef up their sound, other bands like Someplace to Hide skillfully combine elements of post-hardcore and metalcore into their scathing screamo assault to create a force that is hard to reckon with. Formed in 1999 Shikari are yet another example of over-driven screamo that highlights the genres more violent tendencies; consisting of all their recorded material from their year of formation to 2003, 1999-2003 is a great compilation that showcases one of emoviolence's best acts.

Starting chronologically with the song "Post Student Syndrome" (the first track off their debut release Robot Wars), even in their formative years Shikari's sound was well thought and perfectly executed; the aforementioned track for instance is a spectacular combination of chaotic blast-beat driven hardcore sections, metal influenced riffs and powerviolence like dissonance. Although the music always maintains the emoviolence elements of the band as the base for the songs, each track does feature some interestingly diverse interludes and sections that give the album some great personality. "Encounters" offers up some excellent thrash inspired hardcore riffs and in later tracks such as "Morning Wood" the band even experiments a bit more with melody, sections that definitely display their screamo roots more prominently.

Clean and concise, Shikari obviously know how to play their instruments well, performing extreme techniques like blast-beats and tremolo picked riffs with utter perfection, never losing time or sloppily transitioning from section to section. When it comes to instrumental prowess, 1999-2003 is just packed with quality musicianship; "Utopia Dismantled" features some excellent drumming thanks to Michael, who isn't afraid to let his metal influences shine playing some pretty slick double-bass lead sections. "Robot Wars" is another excellent tune that really showcases the talents of vocalist Mark who for the most part sticks to a high pitched screech atypical of the screamo genre but also is capable of some pretty awesome mid-ranged vocals that have some nice bite to them. Overall Shikari proves to be a consistent band, providing many years of material that as evidenced by this compilation kicks butt. If you like screamo that isn't afraid to come out of its shell and beat the crap out of someone then Shikari's 1999-2003 is the perfect release for you. -Char Aznable

Only For The Sake Of Aching - 2005 Robotic Society

Band : Only For The Sake Of Aching
Album : Robotic Society
Release Year : 2005
Genre : Screamo | Emo Violence

 Tracklist :
01 - Intro
02 - Identity Zero
03 - Silent Angels Breaking Dreams
04 - Blinkersyndrom
05 - Das Bin Ich Wirklich
06 - Mediamanipulation
07 - Outro

Germany’s Only for the Sake of Aching (obviously not an emo band, right?) were a part of the up rise in screamo in Europe during the past decade. They has a couple seven inch splits, one with The Third Memory and one with Kias Fansuri and this demo. There was a full length album that had neared completion before the band broke up about four years ago that was never released.

The instrumentation on this album is relatively consistent with general hardcore without ever straying into “emo violence” territory. Because the music fits very squarely into the hardcore category there isn’t really a reason to write home about any of the players. The guitarist provides interesting picking in the softer sections of both Identity Zero and Das Bin Ich Wirklich that provides for a greater variety of mood than the other two songs posses, which is perhaps this release’s greatest weakness. The aforementioned songs have much more overt tones of melody and complexity than Blinkersyndrom and mediamanipulation. That’s not to say that those are bad songs, but they seem to try and go so quickly at times that they lose their focus and composure. Blinkersyndrom especially seems to trip over itself for its thirty-nine second assault in a way that leaves it somewhere between the more “chaotic” versions of screamo and a mini implosion.

The use of multiple vocalists throughout this album only seeks to add to the chaos provided, however it would be nearly inexcusable to omit how amazingly it works in Das Bin Ich Wirklich. While the two vocalists take turns screaming back and forth at each other a third voice speaking in German (I have no idea what he’s saying, I took Spanish) over the melodic guitar work keeps the band from getting in over their heads in terms of chaos, while still managing to create a highly engaging song. Unfortunately Only for the Sake of Aching broke up in 2007 with promises of a full length album that never came. Instead they left us with this demo and five other songs showing a promising punk band that never became all that they could have been. -FilupLees
